On 28 June a remembrance ceremony was held at Havlíčkova Borová, in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic, the birth place of S/Ldr Josef Stránský DFC, pilot with 21 Sqn RAF.
Dne 28. června se v Havlíčkově Borové konalo vzpomínkové shromáždění na Ldr. Josefa Stránského DFC, pilota 21. perutě RAF. Havlíčkův Brod je jeho rodným městem, které se nachází na Českomoravské vysočině v České republice.

The ceremony was held by the towns war memorial. Attending the ceremony were relatives of Josef Stránský, Mr. K. Černý Member of Parliament, the Deputy Minister of Defence, local dignitaries, Czechoslovak RAF veteran Imrich Gablech, RAF re-enactment personnel and well wishers.
Vzpomínkového obřadu, který se konal v Havlíčkově Borové u válečného pomníku se účastnili příbuzní Josefa Stránského, poslanec pan Karel Černý, náměstek ministra obrany, místní hodnostáři, československý veterán pilot RAF, Imrich Gablech P/O, a mnoho příznivců.
After wreaths were laid, speeches were made followed by a flypast by two Gripen fighters of the Czech Air Force to close the ceremony.
Po položení věnců k pomníku, přítomní hosté pronesli projevy a poté následoval průlet dvou Gripenů Českého letectva, který ukončil slavnostní obřad.
Following the ceremony there was a small exhibition of RAF memorabilia and a replica Spitfire, courtesy of the Spitfire Club. The days events concluded with a lecture by Filip Prochazka about the Czechoslovaks who served in the RAF during WW2.
Po obřadu se konala malá výstava suvenýrů RAF a s laskavým svolením Spitffire klubu, replika Spitfire. Akci uzavřel přednáškou o Čechoslovácích, kteří sloužili ve druhé světové válce v RAF, pan Filip Procházka.
The well attended ceremony was to remember the 80th anniversary of his death. On the night of 20/21 June 1944, S/Ldr Josef Stránský DFC and his Czechoslovak navigator F/O František Bouda, took-off, at 00:59 from Thorney Island airfield, in Mosquito VI FB NT182 for a night offensive on German ground targets around Mezidon, in the Normandy region of France. They did not return, reasons for the loss are unclear.
Přítomní na slavnostní ceremonii si připomenuli 80. výročí jeho smrti. V noci z 20/21 června 1944, S/Ldr Josef Stránský DFC a jeho český navigátor P/O František Bouda v 00,59 hod., provedli s Mosquitem VI FB NT 182, vzlet z letiště Thorney Island, aby provedli útok na německé pozemní cíle v prostoru Mézidon, v regionu Normandie ve Francii. Z letu se nevrátili a důvody nejsou známy.
Both airmen are buried in a joint grave B, 31-32 at the Franco-British cemetery, St Valery-en Caux, Seine-Maritime, France.

On 17 June the ‘Winged Lion’ monument to commemorate the some 2,500 Czechoslovak airmen and women who served in the RAF during WW2 was unveiled – nearly 70 years after the end of the war.
Téměř po 70 letech ukončení druhé světové války, dne 17. června, byl na památku 2500 československých letců, mužů a žen, kteří sloužili v RAF odhalen památník.
The monument, a gift from, and mainly funded, by the British ex-pat community in the Czech and Slovak Republics as a ‘thank you’ to those 2,500 Czechoslovaks. The bronze statue is of a lion with wings and was designed by Colin Spofforth, the noted British sculpture. Produced in the Czech Republic, it stands 2 mtrs tall and weighs 1006 kg, It is mounted on a concrete plinth covered in polished Czech granite with the top face designed to resemble the badge of the Czech Air Force. The sides of the base are covered with riveted metal plates which resembles a aircraft’s fuselage.
Památník, jako “poděkování” 2500 Čechoslovákům, darovala a financovala britská komunita v České republice a na Slovensku. Bronzová socha, 2 metry vysoká, těžká 1006 kg, lev s křídly, vyrobená v České republice, navržená významným britským sochařem Colin Spofforth, z české žuly, je uchycena na betonovém podstavci tak, že se horní plochou podobá odznaku československého letectva. Po stranách podstavce jsou uchyceny kovové desky v podobě trupu letadla.

Widows, descendants and relatives of the Czechoslovak RAF airmen were well represented, many having travelled from abroad. Winged Lion sponsors, Svaz letcú and more than 500 well-wishers were present in addition to a large contingent from the Czech media.

The ceremony commenced at 16:30 with a musical presentation by the Royal Air Force College band followed on by the Pipes and Drums of the Queen’s Royal Hussars. At 16:50 VIP’s and veterans arrived.
Slavnostní obřad byl zahájen v 16.30 hod. hudebním vystoupením kapely Royal Air Force College, na kterou navázaly Dudy a Bubny královských husarů. V 16.50 příchod VIP osobností a veteránů ze zahraničí.
Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames
The Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames, gave the opening speech at the ceremony. Within his speech he highlighted that ‘freedom is often only appreciated by those who don’t have it’ and that the air war was crucial to the Allied victory in World War II with Adolf Hitler realising this at the very end. Without the bravery of the RAF pilots, World War II could have had a different outcome, he said. Churchill also often acknowledged the crucial efforts of the RAF in the war.
Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames, pronesl na slavnostním ceremoniálu úvodní projev. V rámci svého projevu zdůraznil, že “svobodu oceňují často jen ti, kteří ji nemají” a že letecká válka byla pro vítězství spojenců ve druhé světové válce rozhodující a tuto skutečnost si na konci války uvědomil i Adolf Hitler. Bez statečnosti pilotů RAF by druhá světová válka měla jiný výsledek a Churchill jejich úsilí uznával jako zásadní.
In his speech he said that “Many countries beyond the shores of the United Kingdom joined the good fight and against numerical odds secured the victory that is still cherished generations later and which saved the world. As Churchill said of the Battle of Britain pilots, ‘Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few.’ Of all the countries to contributed to that effort, Czechoslovakia has a special place,” he said. Praising the men and women who escaped Czechoslovakia and he pointed out that some of the pilots ranked among the very best. “A cruel irony was to follow in that the freedom and sovereignty for which they fought would be lost as they suffered the unforgivable persecution by the communist regime just a few years later,” he said.
Ve svém projevu řekl, že “Mnoho zemí mimo pobřeží Spojeného království se připojilo k dobrému boji a při početním rozporu tak bylo dosaženo vítězství, které je pozdějšími generacemi stále oceňováno a které zachránilo svět. Churchill se o bitvě o Británii vyjádřil slovy: “Nikdy v dějinách lidstva nedlužilo tolik mnohých, tak mnoho, tak málo jedincům”. Řekl, že mezi zeměmi, které přispěly k tomuto úsilí, má Československo zvláštní místo. Chválil muže a ženy, kteří uprchli z Československa a poukázal na to, že někteří z pilotů patřili k nejlepším. Vyjádřil se, že “Krutou ironii, která následovala bylo, že svoboda a suverenita, za kterou bojovali, se ztratila, když za několik let později byli neodpustitelně pronásledováni komunistickým režimem”.
He continued to say of the Czechoslovak airmen that “These young men were the best of the best, their selflessness and their service will not and must not ever be forgotten,” he said, adding that the monument he was about to unveil was a symbol of the commitment and the bravery of those 2,500 men and women and a mark of the respect and admiration of the British people. “It is humbling indeed to be here all of us in the presence of the veterans of that campaign”
Dále se o československých letcích vyjádřil, že Tito mladí lidé byli nejlepší z nejlepších a jejich obětavost služby nebudou a nesmí být nikdy zapomenuty a dodal, že odhalený památník je symbol závazku k statečnosti těchto 2500 mužů a žen a důkaz respektu a obdivu Britů. ” . “Chováme opravdu veliký obdiv nás všech k přítomným veteránům.”
On conclusion of his speech the Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames then invited the nine Czechoslovak RAF veterans present to help unveil the Winged Lion monument.
Na závěr svého projevu Rt Hon sir Nicholas Soames pak pozval devět československých veteránů RAF, aby pomohli při odhalování památníku Okřídleného lva.

“I am very pleased that our capital has from now on a new memorial commemorating the heroism of Czechoslovak pilots. The statue of a winged lion symbolically highlights the friendship between Great Britain and the Czech Republic, whose foundations were formed during the Second World War, when British and Czechoslovak airmen fought together to defend the United Kingdom as the last outpost of democracy in Europe”
“Jsem velmi rád, že naše hlavní město má od nynějška nový památník připomínající hrdinství československých pilotů. Socha okřídleného lva symbolicky poukazuje na přátelství mezi Velkou Británií a Českou republikou, jehož základy byly vytvořeny v průběhu druhé světové války, kdy britští a českoslovenští letci společně bojovali při obraně Spojeného království, jako poslední výspy demokracie v Evropě”.
The National anthems of the Czech Republic and Great Britain were then played, followed by an Act of Remembrance, the Last Post being played, then a minutes silence, concluding with the Reveille being played.
Poté hudba zahrála národní hymny České republiky a Velké Británie a dále proběhlo uctění památky skladbou Večerka, následovala minuta ticha a na závěr trubač zatroubil Budíček.

On 18 June a memorial plaque to commemorate the some 2,500 Czechoslovak airmen and women who served in the RAF during WW2 was unveiled. Two hundred and sixty of these airmen were Slovaks. The memorial plaque is located at the entrance to the Eurovea shopping center at the Milan Rastislav Štefánik Square in Bratislava and it was sponsored by the British expat communities in the Slovak Republic and Czech Republic.
Dňa 18. Júna 2014 bola odhalená pamätná doska na pamiatku približne 2500 československých letcov a žien, ktorí počas 2. svetovej vojny slúžili v RAF. Dvestošesťdesiat týchto letcov boli Slováci. Pamätná tabuľa je umiestnená pri vchode do nákupného centra Eurovea, na námestí Milana Rastislava Štefánika v Bratislave a bola sponzorovaná britskými krajanskými komunitami zo Slovenskej a Českej republiky.

Cremoniál začal o 16:30 h krátkou hudobnou ukážkou Royal Air Force College Band. Plukovná hudba regimentu Queen’s Royal Hussars vypochodovala a viedla zhromaždených význačných hostí, hodnostárov a ostatných pozvaných k pamätnej tabuli.
In his speech before unveiling the plaque, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach said of the wartime Czechoslovak airmen: “Seventy years ago, 2,500 young men from your countries – from their own will – decided to take part in World War II. They flew with the Royal Air Force and were courageous. Many of their friends did not return back. We’re now unveiling a plaque in the spirit of their heroism which is not just a reminder of those brave fighters, but it is also a celebration of the common friendship between Slovakia and Britain”.
Vo svojom prejave pred odhalením pamätnej tabule, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach povedal o československých letcoch počas 2. svetovej vojny: „Pred 70 rokmi, 2 500 mladých mužov z vašich krajín, sa z vlastnej vôle rozhodlo zúčastniť Druhej svetovej vojny. The Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates, an organisation dedicated to keeping the memory alive of the some 2,500 Czechoslovak men and women who served in the RAF during World War II, announces its support for the Winged Lion Memorial due to be unveiled in Prague on 17th June 2014 and its sadness at moves by the Czech National Heritage Institute (Narodni Pamatkovy Ustav, or NPU) to sully the honour of these brave men and women’s service by fighting to have the memorial moved from its planned location at Klarov in central Prague.
The Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates, organizace věnovaná zachování vzpomínky 2 500 československým mužům a ženám, kteří během druhé světové války sloužili v britském Královském letectvu (RAF), vyjádřila podporu památníku Okřídleného lva, který má být odhalen 17. června 2014 v Praze, a také své zarmoucení nad kroky Národního památkového ústavu (NPU), který svým bojem za přesunutí památníku z plánovaného místa na pražském Klárově pošpinil čest těchto statečných mužů a žen.
Unlike the existing Czechoslovak airmen’s memorial at Prostějov, which is a Czechoslovak memorial to honour the Czechoslovak airmen who died in that war fighting with the RAF, the Winged Lion Memorial is a gesture of appreciation from the British ex-patriot community in the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. It is a gesture of “thank you” for the help that Great Britain received in the fight against Nazi Germany. The concept and the required £100,000 funding from that community, as well as the memorial project team’s efforts to realise this important initiative, should be applauded.
Na rozdíl od pomníku československým letcům v Prostějově, který ctí československé letce padlé ve válce při bojích v RAF, je památník Okřídleného lva gestem uznání ze strany britské ex-vlastenecké komunity v České republice a na Slovensku. Je poděkováním za pomoc Velké Británii v boji proti nacistickému Německu. Myšlenka a potřebné finanční prostředky v hodnotě přesahující 3 miliony korun věnované touto komunitou, stejně jako úsilí celého týmu na realizaci této důležité iniciativy, si zaslouží potlesk.
Sadly, this memorial that is a tribute to a proud part of Czech history has now become the subject of controversy after certain factions within Narodni Pamatkovy Ustav have objected to the memorial being sited at Klarov on the grounds that it should be relegated to a less mainstream location elsewhere in Prague. Despite being publicly supported by the Czech Ministry of Culture and the memorial’s site being backed by the Prague 1 authority on whose land it will sit, the NPU and its allies have decided to drag the issue through the courts and vowed the memorial will be moved after its unveiling.
Naneštěstí se tento památník, který je uctěním hrdé součásti české historie, stal předmětem diskuze některých frakcí poté, co Národní památkový ústav vznesl námitky na jeho umístění na Klárově s požadavkem přesunutí památníku na nějaké méně frekventované místo v Praze. Navzdory veřejnému vyjádření podpory ministerstvem kultury a zajištěním místa Městskou částí Praha 1, na jejímž pozemku se bude památník nacházet, se NPU a jeho spojenci rozhodli řešit problém soudní cestou a uvedli, že bude památník po jeho odhalení přesunut.
The reasons that the NPU have given for its stance are at best incoherent, at worst unconscionable. The body advocates that the memorial design should have been selected through the process of a competition to ensure the best design would be chosen and cites the example of the existing 1938-1945 War Memorial on Klarov, which it claimed was won by Vladimir Preclik. Yet the competition was actually won by a different artist, and the final memorial is widely regarded as an eyesore. The NPU also claims it would detract from the War Memorial, despite being sited some distance away, and is not suitable for this part of Prague, yet it would occupy a space near a memorial plaque for Air Marshall Karel Janousek who was the leader of the Czechoslovak men and women who served in the RAF in WW2. It’s hard to think of a more suitable place for the Winged Lion Memorial.
Důvody uvedené NPU pro jeho postoj jsou v lepším případě nesouvislé a v tom horším nepřiměřené. Úřad zastává názor, že měla být podoba památníku zvolena na základě soutěže o nejlepší design. Jako příklad uvádí soutěž o návrh památníku II. odboje z let 1938 – 1945 na Klárově, kterou údajně vyhrál Vladimír Preclík. Soutěž ale ve skutečnosti vyhrál jiný umělec a památník je všeobecně vnímán jako pěst na oko. Ačkoliv má být památník umístěn v určité vzdálenosti od tohoto pomníku, tvrdí NPU, že by od něj odváděl pozornost, a že pro tuto část Prahy není vhodný, protože by se také nacházel blízko pamětní desky leteckého maršála Karla Janouška, předáka československých žen a mužů sloužících ve druhé světové válce v RAF. Jen těžko bychom našli pro památník Okřídleného lva vhodnější místo.
The Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates appreciates that the centre of Prague, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, needs to be protected from developments that would detract from its historical beauty. However, the Winged Lion Memorial is by common consent a piece worthy in all ways of being sited at Klarov, where Czech citizens and visitors alike can learn more about the sacrifice that these brave, patriotic people made so that they can live free today.
The Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates si uvědomuje, že historické centrum Prahy musí být jako světové dědictví na seznamu UNESCO chráněno před vývojem ubírajícím na jeho historické kráse. Památník Okřídleného lva si ve všech směrech zaslouží umístění na Klárově, kde se mohou čeští občané i cizinci dozvědět více o obětech, které tito stateční patrioti utrpěli pro to, abychom dnes mohli žít svobodně.
In this spirit of tribute, the Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates requests therefore that the NPU withdraw its objections and allow the Winged Lion Memorial to remain at the site chosen by Prague 1 and backed by the Ministry of Culture. At a time when the world is standing together to remember the Normandy landings 70 years ago that began the liberation of Europe, an event that the Czechoslovak airmen directly participated in and some died during, to do otherwise would dishonour their service and be a betrayal of their sacrifice.
Z těchto důvodů žádá organizace The Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates Národní památkový ústav, aby stáhl své námitky a schválil setrvání památníku Okřídleného lva na místě zvoleném Městskou částí Praha 1, jemuž vyjádřilo podporu ministerstvo kultury. V době, kdy si celý svět společně připomíná 70. výročí vylodění v Normandii a počátek osvobození Evropy, jehož se českoslovenští letci přímo účastnili a během něhož někteří z nich padli, by se v opačném případě jednalo o zneuctění jejich obětí.
“The 3rd of June 1942 was a beautiful sunny day. The Czech wing was flying from Warmwell to give top cover to several bombers on their way to bomb something in Cherbourg.
“3. června 1942 byl krásný slunečný den. Český wing měl letět z Warmwellu, aby poskytl krytí několika bombardérům, kteří měli provést nálet někde u Cherbourgu.

I was leading white section of 312 sq on the port of the leading section and F/Lt Dvořák the green section on starboard. The squadron was led by S/Ldr Cermák.
Vedl jsem bílou sekci 312. perutě nalevo, vedoucí sekce kapitán Dvořák sekci zelenou na pravoboku. Peruti velel major Čermák.
When the bombers crossed the French coast, the wing started the turn for the homerun. We were in a very loose formation as top cover always was. Therefore the squadrons on the wings had to change from port to starboard and vice versa. The same had to be done in each squadron, each section and each pair. You can imagine, that there was a lot of action in the air as 36 aircraft were regrouping. All pilots watching out to avoid collisions.
Když bombardéry překročily francouzské pobřeží, celý wing zahájil obrátku pro cestu zpět. Nacházeli jsme se ve velmi volné formaci, tak jak tomu při krytí shora vždycky bývá. Proto si perutě celého wingu musely prohodit strany zleva na pravou a naopak. Totéž se muselo provést uvnitř každé peruti, v každé sekci i každé dvojici. Dovedete si představit, že to nebylo nic jednoduchého, protože se přeskupovalo všech 36 strojů. Všichni piloti si dávali pozor, aby se vyhnuli případným kolizím.
It was a perfect moment for the Fw-190’s to attack there was no warning on R/T and they came from the sun which at that moment was at 50K. We were taken completely by surprise.
Pro nepřátelské Fw-190 to byla ideální chvíle pro útok, radiem jsme nedostali žádné varování, navíc nalétávali směrem od slunce. Byli jsme zcela zaskočeni.
The first 190 I spotted passed me on the starboard coming down from the sun at considerable speed. I just had time to scream my warning “Breakaway port”, turn on my back and went down. As I did that I saw another 190 which overtook me and started to climb. I followed and was on his tail, I fired a short burst without results. Then I got him perfectly in my sights but was losing speed. Never the less I gave him a very long burst. Unfortunately, the recoil of my canons slowed me down so much that my Spit went into a spin.
První “stodevadesátku” jsem zahlédl, jak se ke mně z pravoboku od slunce blíží značnou rychlostí. Stihnul jsem tak akorát vykřiknout varování “Zdrháme vlevo”, otočit se na záda a jít dolů. Když jsem to udělal, viděl jsem další 190, která šla přede mne a začala stoupat. Sledoval jsem ji za ocasem a vypálil krátkou dávku, ale bez výsledku. Pak jsem ho dostal perfektně na mušku, ale ztrácel jsem rychlost. Přesto jsem vypálil dlouhou dávku. Avšak zpětný ráz mých kanónů mě bohužel natolik zpomalil, že se můj Spitfire začal točit.
I made a few turns and straightened out into the company of four 190s. They were completely unprepared for my recovery, which ended about 60 yards behind the tail of the leader of the second pair. My first burst sent him down in smoke. His No.2 followed him down. The remaining two started a dog fight which lasted about four to five minutes. By then I was out of ammunition but they must also have exhausted theirs as they turned for home. I was left alone trying to control my nerves, circling and looking for friend or foe. There was nothing around! I could still see the coast of France and I turned for home, climbing slightly to recover some height. I was checking my plane for damage but could see none.
Udělal jsem několik obratů a ocitnul se ve společnosti čtyř 190. Nebyli vůbec připraveni na moje znovuvzkříšení, když jsem se zjevil asi 60 yardů za ocasem velitele druhé dvojice. Hned první dávka ho poslala v kouři dolů. Jeho dvojka ho následovala dolů. Zbývající dva se do mne pustili jako psi, honička trvala asi čtyři až pět minut. V té době už mi došla munice, ale i oni toho měli dost a obrátili se domů. Zůstal jsem tam sám a snažil jsem se uklidnit nervy, kroužil a hledal někoho z našich, či nepřítele. Ale kolem nebylo nic! Stále jsem viděl francouzské pobřeží, nabral jsem tedy směr domů a mírně stoupal, abych se vzpamatoval. Zkontroloval jsem svůj letoun, zda nemá nějaké poškození, ale žádné jsem nezaznamenal.
I continued on my way home wondering where everybody was. Suddenly, I heard two loud bangs, it sounded very much like my own canons. Thinking that I must have overlooked somebody, I turned to see behind my tail, but there was nothing – when I turned back, my cockpit was full of fire. I always dreaded fire; In a split second I undid my harness, opened the cockpit and the door and was out before I started to think.
Pokračoval jsem v cestě domů a přemýšlel, kde mohou všichni být? Najednou jsem uslyšel dvě hlasité rány, znělo to velmi podobně jako moje vlastní kánony. Napadlo mne, že jsem musel někoho přehlédnout a otočil jsem se, abych viděl za svůj ocas, ale nic jsem nespatřil – když jsem se však otočil zpět, můj kokpit byl plný ohně. Vždy jsem se ohně bál; během zlomku vteřiny jsem si rozepnul postroj, otevřel kokpit i dveře a byl jsem venku dřív než jsem stačil začít přemýšlet.
Going down head first I could see my aircraft going straight, no smoke, no fire, the biggest shock in my life. I just could not believe it. Also, there was nobody around as far as I could see. This stayed engraved in my memory day and night for many months. I was trying to figure out what happened. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that what happened must have been the explosion of the two wireless sets, which could be destroyed by pressing a button in case of a landing in enemy territory.
Nejdřív jsem padal hlavou dolů a viděl, jak můj stroj pokračuje rovně v letu, žádný kouř, žádný oheň, největší šok v mém životě. Nemohl jsem tomu uvěřit. Také žádný další letoun, pokud jsem mohl vidět. To se mi vracelo do paměti dnem i nocí po mnoho dalších měsíců. Snažil jsem se přijít na to, co se to vlastně stalo. Nakonec jsem dospěl k závěru, že se muselo jednat o explozi dvou radiových souprav, které měly být zničeny stisknutím tlačítka v případě přistání na nepřátelském území.
Unfortunately, my theory was shattered only last year by my best friend, the chief engineering officer of our squadron, he said that it was not possible and what must have happened was that I was hit by a high explosive shell directly in the cockpit. He did not explain why I was not touched or at least my uniform pierced by the hundreds of splinters that must have been flying around. So here I am back with the mystery.
Bohužel, moji teorii rozbil před rokem můj nejlepší přítel, hlavní technický důstojník naší perutě, když řekl, že to není možné a to, co se muselo stát, byl zřejmě zásah vysoce výbušným granátem přímo do kokpitu. Nevysvětlil však, proč jsem zůstal nezraněn či proč má uniforma nebyla plná střepin, které by musely létat kolem. Takže celá záhada zůstává nevysvětlena.
But I had better go on with my journey down on my parachute.
Ale měl bych se raději věnovat své cestě dolů na mém padáku.
I landed in the drink, blew up my dinghy without trouble, got out my compass and the paddles and started on my journey home. I was not very worried as I thought I must be close to halfway between the Isle of Wight and Normandy and sooner or later some British aircraft will spot me and send rescue.
Přistál jsem do vody, bez problémů nechal nafouknout svůj člun, vytáhl kompas a pádla a vydal se směrem k domovu. Neměl jsem žádné velké obavy, neboť jsem se domníval, že musím být někde v půli cesty mezi Isle of Wight a Normandií a dříve či později mě některé z britských letadel spatří a pošlou záchranu.
It happened almost as I expected, with only a minor variation – it was not a British but a German aircraft. First two FWs 190 and after some time a seaplane. It landed 60 to 80 yards from me, a door opened and down the steps out onto the float came an airman armed with a boathook.
Události se seběhly téměř podle mého očekávání, pouze s tím rozdílem, že ty letouny nebyly britské, nýbrž německé. První dva byly FW 190 a po nějaké době jejich hydroplán. Přistál 60 až 80 yardů ode mě, otevřely se dveře a po schodech dolů na plovák sestoupil letec vyzbrojený hákem.
I was not very keen to becoming a PoW and foolishly decided to capture his plane. I got my gun out of my boots; the canvas paddles strapped to my arms hid them completely and I was slowly approaching my unsuspecting victim. As he started to reach for the dinghy with his boathook another man stepped out of the door, aiming at me with a Tommy gun. I was all the time a little worried whether my gun would fire properly, having been submerged in water, so I decided not to take the risk.
Neměl jsem velkou chuť skončit v zajetí a pošetile zvažoval možnost zmocnit se jejich letounu. Vytáhl jsem pistoli z holínky; plátěná pádla, připevněná na rukou zbraň úplně zakrývala a já jsem se pomalu blížil ke své nic netušící oběti. Když se svým hákem snažil zachytit můj člun, vyšel ze dveří další muž a mířil na mě pistolí. Během celé té doby jsem se trochu obával, zda bude moje zbraň dobře fungovat, protože jsem strávil dost času ponořený ve vodě a tak jsem se rozhodl neriskovat.
I opened my hands and my guns went down to the bottom of the channel. So this is how I finished as PoW.
Otevřel jsem dlaň a pistole se poroučela na dno Kanálu. Tak jsem se stal válečným zajatcem.
Dvořák was shot down sometime during the first attack. His tail was shot off and he had a hard time to get out of the uncontrollable aircraft. He eventually succeeded but on opening his parachute he got entangled in the cord and his arm was broken. He was transferred to a hospital and arrived at Sagan much later.
Dvořák byl sestřelen už během prvního útoku. Dostal zásah na ocas a jen těžko se dostával ven z neřiditelného letadla. Nakonec uspěl, ale při otevření padáku se zamotal do šňůr a zlomil si ruku. Byl převezen do nemocnice a do zajateckého tábora v Saganu dorazil mnohem později.”
He did not get out after the communists took over in Czechoslovakia, was very badly treated and died in the seventies.”
Po převzetí moci komunisty v Československu se mu nepodařilo utéct za hranice, bylo s ním špatně zacházeno a zemřel v sedmdesátých letech.”
Both Tonder and Dvořák participated in ‘The Great Escape‘ from Sagan on the night of 23/24 March 1944 where 76 Allied RAF officers escaped from Stalag Luft III. Of the escapees, Three managed to successfully reach neutral countries; two to Sweden and one to Spain. Of the 73 who were recaptured 50 were murdered by the Gestapo; Tonder and Dvořák were one of the lucky 23. After their recapture, both airmen were sent to Pankrac prison, Prague where they were tried, along with other Czechoslovak RAF PoW’s for being traitors to the Third Reich and received death sentences. The intervention of the International Red Cross resulted in the Germans agreeing that the sentences being suspended until after the war.
Oba, Tonder i Dvořák se stali účastníky tzv. “Velkého útěku” ze Saganu v noci ze dne 23. na 24. března 1944, kdy ze Stalag Luft III uniklo 76 spojeneckých důstojníků RAF. Třem z těchto uprchlíků se podařilo úspěšně dostat na svobodu v neutrálních zemích; dva do Švédska a jeden do Španělska. Ostatních 73 bylo znovu zadrženo a 50 z nich popraveno gestapem; Tonder a Dvořák patřili mezi oněch 23 šťastnějších. Po svém opětovném zadržení byli oba piloti posláni do vězení na Pankráci v Praze, kde byli souzeni spolu s dalšími čs. RAF válečnými zajatci za zradu Třetí říše a dostali rozsudky smrti. Zásah Mezinárodního červeného kříže však vedl k tomu, že Němci souhlasili s pozastavením trestů až do skončení války.

The Pipes and Drums band of the Queen’s Royal Hussars will lead VIP’s, sponsors and invited guests to the British Embassy to view the Spitfire flypast.
Sbor královských dudáků a bubeníků pak půjde v čele průvodu VIP osobností, veteránů druhé světové války, sponzorů a pozvaných hostů na britské velvyslanectví a nad nimi provede průlet letoun Spitfire.

Stephen Stead will be flying Spitfire XVI DU-N, TE184 which is marked up in 312 Sqn guise as flown by F/Lt Otto Smik. For Spitfire aficionados, weather permitting, it is scheduled for a take-off about 12:00 from Kbely airbase, circuit the airfield and then landing. As Kbely is a military airbase, public access onto the airbase is not permitted. However there are numerous vantage locations outside the airfield for suitable public viewing and photographers.
S letounem Spitfire XVI. s označením 312. perutě, DU-N TE 184, s nímž létal F/Lt Otto Smik, bude létat Stephen Stead. Pro nadšence letounu Spitfire je za pěkného počasí naplánován na letišti Kbely ve 12,00 hodin vzlet, let po kruhu a přistání. Vzhledem k tomu, že letiště Kbely je vojenskou základnou, přístup veřejnosti na letiště není dovolen. Mimo letiště však existuje řada vyhlídek vhodných pro pozorování a fotografování letu.
