RAF service records are referenced by Service Number, Rank and Full Name, and will also contain the Date of Birth. To assist with locating the correct record it is important that as much of this information as possible is provided.
The RAF service records are no longer held by the RAF. Where a record is held depends on whether the person was an officer or an airman:
Officers – Ministry of Defence
Records of RAF officers are held by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). They can be requested online at GOV.UK, or by post using the military service request forms. Requests may take up to a year to be processed.
Airmen (non-commissioned ranks) – The National Archives
Records of RAF airmen born before 1 January 1940 are being transferred from the MOD to The National Archives at Kew, a process expected to be completed in 2027. These can be requested from The National Archives. Check the MOD’s list of transferred records first – if a record has not yet been transferred, request it from the MOD as above.
In both cases a copy of the death certificate (or other proof of death) is required, unless the person died in service. Fees are charged for copies. Full details are on GOV.UK: Request records of deceased service personnel.
