Note* The original order from Israel was for some 50+ Spitfire IX’s (and a further 9 later). Deliveries began on May 20th 1948. Some of the aircraft didn’t arrive in time to participate in the ongoing hostilities. They were ‘exported’ by a variety of methods. Six aircraft were moved directly by air under Operation Velveta 1; with a further 12 aircraft being moved on December 18th 1948, under Operation Velveta 2. ( Initially the Spitfires were painted in Yugoslav AF markings for their transit for Kunovice to Niksic in Montenegro (a former Luftwaffe base in the then Yugoslavia). One Spitfire was left behind at Niksic after damaging its undercarriage on landing. Five other carried on and were led towards Israel by an Israeli AF Norseman aircraft . Unfortunately two of the aircraft had to land on Rhodes due to lack of fuel and were ‘interned’. Later on Yugoslavia refused the Israelis permission to refuel and had to be ‘bought’. Other Spit’s were dismantled and together with 12 Merlin 66 engines, were moved in crates marked as ‘Scrap Iron’.

In addition the Czechs also trained 81 pilots and 69 ground crew.
