Josef Frantisek – Remembrance 24 September 2024.

The 24 September saw a respectful commemoration event held at the Kent Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge, Kent, for Josef František who, with three fellow Czechoslovak pilots, Josef Bajelka, Matěj Pavlovič and Vilém Košař flew with distinction in the Polish campaign of September 1939 and became known as the ‘Český čtyřlístek’ – the Czech four leaf clover.

24. září se v The Kent Battle of Britain v Hawkinge uskutečnila důstojná vzpomínka na Josefa Františka, který s dalšími Čechoslováky Josefem Balejkou, Matějem Pavlovičem a Vilémem Košařem prošel v září 1939 se ctí bitvou o Polsko. Tito spolubojovníci později vešli ve známost jako „Československý čtyřlístek“.

In the Battle of Britain, František flew with 303 (Polish) Squadron and was the squadrons most successful pilot of that battle having achieved 17 combat success’s before his untimely death in a flying accident on 8 October 1940, near Sutton, Surrey.

V bitvě o Británii sloužil František u 303. (polské) perutě. V jejích řadách vybojoval sedmnáct vzdušných vítězství a stal se tak nejúspěšnějším pilotem perutě. Tato bitva se mu však také stala osudnou – našel v ní svou smrt – 8. října 1940 nedaleko Suttonu v hrabství Surrey při letecké nehodě.

In September 2022, the first memorial plaque for the Český čtyřlístek was unveiled at the Museum.

První pamětní deska věnovaná Československému čtyřlístku byla odhalena v září 2022 v muzeu.

With 2024, being the 110th anniversary of the birth of František, Vladimír Ambros and a delegation from Otaslavice, which included the Marek Hýbl, Mayor of Otaslavice and the President of the Otaslavice Klub Vojenské Historie, drove over from the Czech Republic to the museum to lay wreaths and flowers at the memorial plaque and sing the Czechoslovak national anthem. Amongst the Otaslavice delegation was Igor Fryč, the nephew of Josef František and only known living relative.

V roce 2024, kdy si připomínáme 110. výročí narození Josefa Františka, dorazila do muzea delegace z jeho rodných Otaslavic s Vladimírem Ambrosem, předsedou místního Klubu vojenské historie, a starostou obce Markem Hýblem. Členem výpravy byl také Igor Fryč, synovec Josefa Františka a jeho jediný známý žijící příbuzný.

This was followed by a presentation, in English, about the life and achievements of Josef František.

V rámci vzpomínky položili účastníci k pamětní desce věnce a květiny a zazpívali československou hymnu. Poté následovala řeč v angličtině o životě a úspěších Josefa Františka.

Amongst those also attending this informal event were the Defence Office from the Czech Embassy, London and also a Group Captain from the RAF.

Této neformální vzpomínky se zúčastnil také zástupce české ambasády v Londýně a zástupce britské Royal Air Force.
