The 70th anniversary of the RAF Operation Circus 157 was commemorated on the 5th May 2012 at the CWGC Ypres Town Extension Cemetery.

5. května jsme si na vojenském hřbitově Ypres Town Extension v Ypres připomněli 70. Výročí RAF Operace Circus 157.

The remembrance ceremony honoured the four gallant Spitfire pilots killed during this operation near Ypres: British F/Sgt Jones, a Czech Sgt Pavlík, a Canadian Sgt Ribout and a Belgian F/Lt De Hemptinne.

Pietní slavnost byla uspořádána na počest čtyř statečných pilotů Spitfirů, kteří padli během této operace v oblasti Ypres: Brita F/Sgt Jonese, Čecha Sgt Pavlíka, Kanaďana Sgt Ribouta a Belgičana F/Lt De Hemptinna.

Amongst the guests of honour were Group Captain Ian Middleton BA MBA FRAeS RAF (Retd), representing the British Embassy, Colonel Ondřej Hvorecký, Military Attache of the Czech Republic for Benelux, Major Sylvain Gazaille and Chief Warrant Officer Stephane Guy of RCAF (SHAPE) on behalf of the Canadian Embassy, family of Sgt Pavlík, Mr. Andre Santy, President of the Belgian RAF/SAAF Veterans’ Association, Mr. Andrew White, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Ypres Branch with the visiting Royal British Legion, Carlton and District Branch, Gedling, Nottinghamshire, England, and others.

Mezi čestnými hosty byli přítomni Group Captain Ian Middleton BA MBA FRAeS RAF (v.v.), který zastupoval ambasádu Velké Británie; plk. Ondřej Hvorecký, vojenský atašé České republiky pro Benelux; major Sylvain Gazaille a nadpraporčík Stéphane Guy RCAF (SHAPE) reprezentující kanadskou ambasádu; dcera Sgt Pavlíka s rodinou; pan André Santy, president belgické veteránské asociace RAF/SAAF; pan Andrew White, předseda Royal British Legion v Ypres spolu s hostující delegací Royal British Legion – Carlton and District Branch, Gedling, Nottinghamshire, Anglie, a další.

Brief speeches were held in tribute of these pilots, underlying the ultimate sacrifice they made for freedom of our countries and ourselves and reminding us of their torch being carried on by the contemporary RAF pilots during their missions.

Předneseny byly krátké projevy k poctě těchto pilotů, zdůrazňující nejvyšší oběť, kterou položili pro svobodu našich zemí a nás samotných a připomínající nám, že jejich pochodeň dál plane v rukou současných pilotů RAF na leteckých misích.

Vivid description of what the pilots must have seen and how they must have felt during their last moments alive, sent cold chills up our spines. Their heroism may have been perhaps inconspicuous, but heroes they were nonetheless and “we will remember them! “

Z barvitého popisu toho, co piloti museli vidět a jak se museli cítit během posledních okamžiků svého života, nám běhal mráz po zádech. Jejich hrdinství bylo možná nenápadné, ale to z nich nedělá o nic menší hrdiny a my vzdáváme “Čest jejich památce!”

Four buglers of the Last Post Association in Ypres sounded the Last Post; the Prayer for the Fallen was recited by Father Brian Llewellyn of St George´s Memorial Church in Ypres, after which the Exhortation followed. Then the piper – Mr. Pierre Dervaux -played the hauntingly beautiful lament ‘In Flanders Fields’.

Čtyři trubači z Asociace Last Post v Ypres zahráli Večerku; Modlitba za padlé byla přednesena rev. Brianem Llewellynem z vojenského anglikánského kostela Sv. Jiří v Ypres, následoval verš tzv. Nabádání (Exhortation) a dudák – pan Pierre Dervaux – přednesl neuvěřitelně dojemný Lament V polích flanderských.

After the wreaths were placed, the Revaille resounded in the air and the Kohima Prayer closed the ceremony.

Poté, co byly položeny věnce, zazněl Réveille (Budíček) a Modlitba Kohima uzavřela pietní slavnost.

We then walked to the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres and took part in the official Last Post Ceremony honouring the allied fallen every evening at 8 pm.

Nato se přítomní vydali k Památníku pohřešovaných – Meninské bráně v Ypres a zúčastnili se oficiálního ceremoniálu Last Post, který se pořádá každý večer ve 20 hod. k poctě padlých spojeneckých vojáků.

To our great surprise and a fortunate coincidence, the European Air Chiefs also attended, together with the Belgian Air Force Band, playing the RAF March!

K našemu velkému překvapení a velmi šťastnou náhodou se obřadu zúčastnili I evropští vzdušní velitelé spolu s hudbou belgického letectva, která zahrála Pochod RAF!

A most fitting and beautiful tribute also to the four RAF pilots of the Operation Circus 157 resting in peace in a British military cemetery a few hundred yards up the road.

Velmi výstižný a krásný hold také našim čtyřem pilotům RAF z Operace Circus 157, odpočívajícím v pokoji na britskémvojenském hřbitově několik set metrů vzdáleném.

Our day’s events were concluded with a Toast of Remembrance at our reserved room at the Ypra Inn, opposite the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing.

Pamětní události tohoto dne zakončil “přípitek na památku” v místním café Ypra Inn poblíž Meninské brány.

Our next official commemoration of the RAF Operation Circus 157 will take place in two years’ time, on 5th May 2014.

Naše příští oficiální pietní akce v souvislosti s RAF Operací Circus 157 bude za dva roky, 5. Května 2014.
