The remains of the highest commander of Czechoslovak airmen
in the RAF have been reinterred

Zabloudíte-li na pražský hřbitov Šárka, najdete u kostela svatého Matěje hrob s bílým křížem a na něm písmena JHS. Právě sem byly 12. 5. 2014 odpoledne přeneseny ostatky armádního generála RNDr. Karla Janouška, KCB, vrchního velitele československých letců RAF, původně uložené na libeňském hřbitově.

If you visit the Šárka cemetery in Prague, you will find near the church of Sv. Matěj, a grave with a white cross and the letters JHS. Here lies the remains of Air Marshal RNDr. Karel Janoušek, KCB, supreme commander of the Czechoslovak airmen in RAF, reinterred here on the 12th of May, 2014. Previously his grave was at the Libeň cemetery in Prague.

Stalo se tak za přítomnosti rodinných příslušníků, zástupců Československé obce legionářské, Klubu vojenské historie 276th Sqdn (reenacted) RAF, o.s., Leteckého klubu generála Janouška a Mezinárodního řádu Křižovníci s červeným srdcem Cyriaci.

This ceremony was held in company of Karel Janoušek´s family, deputy of Československá obec legionářská (Czechoslovak Association of Legionaries), Living history group KVH 276th Sqdn (reenacted) RAF, General Karel Janoušek Aviation club and Cyriaci [the International order of Knights of the cross, with a red heart].

Hřbitov Šárka se nachází na konci ulice U Matěje, nedaleko stejnojmenné autobusové zastávky. Spolu s generálem Janouškem jsou zde pohřbeny další zajímavé osobnosti, například herec Josef Kemr, vědec a buditel Filip Stanislav Kodym, politk Petr Lom a další.

Šárka cemetery in Prague is situated near end of street U Matěje, not far from the bus station with same name. Here also are graves of other interesting people – actor Josef Kemr, scientist Filip Stanislav Kodym, politician Petr Lom and others.

Life of army general i. m. RNDr. Karel Janoušek

Narodil se 30. října 1893 v Přerově. Za první světové války bojoval v československých legií na Rusi, za druhé světové války nejprve organizoval československé vojenské letectvo ve Francii, po jejím pádu byl nejvyšším velitelem československých letců v Royal Air Force, za což obdržel řád Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (KCB) a po válce byl povýšen do hodnosti Air Marshal. Zaplatil za to ale smrtí manželky a několika dalších příbuzných, kteří byli nacisty zavražděni.

He was born on the 30th of October, 1893 in Přerov. He fought as Czechoslovak legionary in Russia, he organized Czechoslovak military air forces in France and after its fall was supreme commander of Czechoslovak airmen in the RAF during WW2. Because of his service was awarded with the Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath and promoted to the rank of Air Marshal. But his wife and members of his family were murdered by the Nazis.

Prakticky ihned po únorovém komunistickém převratu byl z letectva propuštěn a krátce na to z politických důvodů odsouzen a uvězněn. Komunistům nebylo zatěžko ho nasadit na spoluvězně, důstojníka Waffen SS, pod příslibem údajného zkrácení trestu. Vězněn byl dvanáct let a deset dní. Poté mu byl vyměřen důchod nedostatečný k přežití, a tak pracoval jako pracovník inventury národného podniku Textil Praha. Karel Janoušek, KCB zemřel 27. 10. 1971 v Praze. Byl částečně rehabilitován v roce 1968, plně po roce 1989.

He was dismissed from Czechoslovakian military air forces after the communist putsch in 1948, tried and imprisoned. The Communist used him as an informer against a Nazi officer and promised him that his sentence will be shorter. He was imprisoned for twelve years and ten days. His pension was insufficient and he worked as auditor for the Textil Praha company. He died on 27th of October, 1971 in Prague. He was partially rehabilitated in 1968 with a full reinstatement following the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
