Talisman ‘Bobby’ Novák celebrates his 70th

Psal se 25.12.1942, Boží hod nejtěžšího roku 2 sv. války. Jednadvacetiletý Sgt. Jaroslav Novák před týdnem dokončil výcvik navigátora bombardéru a čerpal dovolenou před operačním nasazením u 311. čs. bombardovací peruti.

It was 25th December 1942, Christmas Day of the hardest year of WW2. 21 year old Sgt Jaroslav Novák had finished his navigator training a week ago and was on leave before his operational posting to 311 Bomber Sqn.

Moc se těšil na společné setkání s přítelkyní Barbarou Harridge a její rodinou v Readingu. Celá rodina Jaroslava vřele přivítala. Sestra Barbary Monika byla ošetřovatelka v místní nemocnici a požádala Jaroslava, zda by byl ochoten přijít na Boxing day, což je v češtině Boží hod, do nemocnice. Zde měl rozdat dárky dětem a ostatním pacientům.

He was very much looking forward to his meeting with his girl-friend Barbara Harridge and her family in Reading. The whole family welcomed Jaroslav warmly. Barbara´s sister was a nurse in the local hospital and asked Jaroslav whether he would be willing to come to the hopital on Christmas Day. Here he would give out presents to the children and other patients.

Jaroslav rád pozvání přijal. Koncem roku 1942 byli letci, hoši v modrém, velmi populární. Anglický národ na ně hleděl s úctou, neboť byli jediní, krom menšího procenta námořníků a vojáků v Africe a v Asii, kteří bojovali a umírali denně. Ztráty i úspěchy byly veliké. Když tedy do nemocnice přišel letec předávat dětem a pacientům dárky, to pro všechny byla vzácná chvíle.

Jaroslav accepted the invitation with pleasure. At the end of 1942 airmen, the boys in blue, were very popular. The English nation viewed them with respect because they were the only ones, except for a small percentage of sailors and soldiers in Africa and Asia, who were fighting and fell every day. The losses and successes were great. Hence when a airmen arrived to the hospital to distribute the presents, it was a special moment for one and all.

Než Jaran začal předávat dárky, hlavní sestra ho zavedla do pokoje, kde se shromáždily veškeré dárky pro děti a pacienty. Během prohlížení jednotlivých dárků uviděl Jarda pleteného zajíce. Nemohl od něj odpoutat oči a sestra si toho všimla …

Before Jaroslav commenced to give out the presents, the Staff-Nurse led him into a room, where all the presents for the children and patients were gathered. During viewing of the individual presents, Jarda noticed a knitted hare. He could not take his eyes off of him and the nurse noticed it….

Když Jaroslav předal veškeré dárky, sklidil potlesk a zároveň byl obdarován na první pohled oblíbeným pleteným zajícem. Z darovaného zajíce se stal talisman, který pokřtili pivem a dostal jméno podle Barbary, které jsme říkali „Bobby“. Nikdy se nestalo, že by Jaroslav letěl bez Bobbyho. Kdekdo z kamarádů u letectva měl z Jaroslava a Bobbyho srandu, ale fakt je, že ať se jim sebevíc smáli nebo vyhrožovali, že Bobbyho načerní kolomazí, tak Jaroslava bez Bobbyho do letadla nepustili.

When Jaroslav gave out all the presents, he was applauded and at the same time he was presented with the knitted hare he liked at first sight. The donated hare turned into a good luck charm, which they baptised with beer and named after Barbara who we used to call ‘Bobby’. Jaroslav would never fly without ‘Bobby’. All his mates in the Air Force took the mickey out of Jaroslav and ‘Bobby’, but the fact remains, that no matter how hard they laughed at them or threatened to tar ‘Bobby’ black, they wouldn´t allow Jaroslav in the aircraft without ‘Bobby’.

Bobby měl místo na navigačním stole a „kontroloval“ Jaroslavovi výpočty. Za války spolu absolvovali 46 operačních letů a bezpočet neoperačních. Přežili útok stíhače, útoky na ponorky a konvoje i nepřízeň počasí. Třikrát se podívali v rámci 246. dopravní peruti do Indie a jednou na Island. Po konci války létali u letecké dopravní skupiny až do dubna 1946, než pod tlakem komunistů opustil Jaroslav čs. vojenské letectvo.

‘Bobby’ had his place on the navigation desk and ‘controlled’ Jaroslav´s calculations. During the war, they accomplished 46 operational and countles non operational flights together. They survived a fighter attack, attacks on submarines and convoys as well as bad weather. They saw India three times and Iceland once with the 246 Transport Sqn. After the end of the war, they flew with the Czechoslovak Transport Regiment till April 1946, when Jaroslav left the Czechoslovak Air Force because of Communist pressure.

K létání se vrátili až po několika letech v Austrálii, kam Jaroslav emigroval. Tu spolu skrz na skrz prolétali.

They returned to flying only several years later in Australia, where Jaroslav emigrated. They flew all around it together.

V rámci rehabilitace a oslav padesátiletého výročí Bitvy o Británii navštívil Jaroslav s Bobbym Velkou Británii. Státní televize udělala krátký spot s Jaroslavem a Bobbym v jeho náruči a natočila jejich dobrodružný příběh. Když byl posléze pořad vysílán, viděla ho v televizi Barbara, dívka, díky které Jaroslav za války Bobbyho dostal. Neměli spolu od roku 1945 žádný kontakt, a díky Bobbymu se opět sešli.

Within the frame of rehabilitation and the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Jaroslav and ‘Bobby’ visited the UK. The BBC made a short interview with Jaroslav and ‘Bobby’ in his arms and filmed their adventurous story. When the programme was subsequently broadcasted, it was seen on TV by Barbara, the girl thanks to whom Jaroslav got Bobby during the war. They had not been in touch since 1945 and thanks to ‘Bobby’ they met again.

Roku 2005 zemřela Barbara a v říjnu 2011 odešel Jaroslav. Mohlo by se zdát, že tím příběh Bobbyho končí. Není to tak, Bobby se vrátil do České republiky na konci roku 2011 a bude se zúčastňovat výstav a pietních oslav našich letců a vojáků, kteří bojovali za svobodu naší vlasti.

Barbara died in 2005 and in October 2011 Jaroslav passed away. It could appear that this is the end of Bobby´s story. But it´s not the case, Bobby was returned to the Czech Republic at the end of 2011 and will participate in exhibitions and commemorations of our airmen and army, who fought for the freedom of our country.
