The 70th Anniversary to commemorate the Battle of Britain was held on 10 July 2010 at the National Battle of Britain Memorial, Capel-le-Ferne, Kent. A total of 2940 Allied airmen – historically known as ‘The Few’ – flew in that momentous battle to defend England against the German Luftwaffe. Within ‘The Few’ there were 88 pilots from Czechoslovakia, the 2nd largest contingent from occupied Europe.
10. července 2010 se u Národního památníku Bitvy o Británii na Capel-le Ferne v hrabství Kent konal vzpomínkový ceremoniál k 70. výročí Bitvy o Británii. Této historické bitvy k obraně Anglie proti německé Luftwaffe se preletelo celkem 2940 spojeneckých letcu – historicky známých jako “Hrstka”. V ní bylo 88 pilotů z Československa, početně druhá největší jednotka z okupované Evropy.
Dňa 10. júla 2010 sa konala pietna akcia pri príležitosti 70. výročia v národnom pamätníku Bitky o Britániu v Cap-le-Ferne v grófstve Kent vo Veľkej Británií. V tejto významnej bitke preletelo celkom 2940 spojeneckých letcov – historicky známych ako “Hŕstka” – aby ochránilo Britániu pred nemeckou Luftwaffe. V rámci “Hŕstky” bojovalo taktiež 88 pilotov z Československa, jednalo sa o druhý najväčší kontingent z území okupovanej Európy.
The ceremony was attended by more than 5,000 people including relatives of ‘The Few’, local dignitaries, the world-wide media, and Government representatives from the nations whose pilots fought in that battle.
Pietní akce se zúčastnilo více než pět tisíc lidí včetně příbuzných pilotů z “Hrstky”, představitelů místní samosprávy, sdělovacích prostředků z celého světa a zástupci těch národů, jejichž piloti v tamté bitvě bojovali.
Ceremónie sa zúčastnilo viac ako 5 000 ľudí, vrátane príbuzných hrdinských letcov z “Hŕstky”, miestnych predstaviteľov samosprávy, svetových medií a zástupcov vlád národov, ktorích piloti sa zúčastnili tohto významného dejinného momentu.
From their Embassies in London, Attachés from Poland, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States were there to represent their Governments in honouring their nations’ airmen, with Australia represented by 2 Embassy officials.
Ze svých velvyslanectví v Londýně tam byli atašé Polska, Francie, Kanady, Austrálie, Nového Zélandu, Jižní Afriky a Spojených států amerických, aby reprezentovali své vlády v uctění letců jejich národů, Austrálii zastupovali dva představitelé velvyslanectví.
Z ich veľvyslanectiev v Londýne tam zastupovali svoje národy a vlády na počesť ich statočných letcov, atašé z Poľska, Francúzska, Kanady, Nového Zélandu, Juhoafrickej republiky a Spojených štátov amerických, Austráliu zastupovali dvaja úradníci veľvyslanectva.
Many wreaths were laid at that Ceremony – with even children from the local primary school laying their humble wreath – these and the many tributes placed that day were left on display for other visitors to see for many months to come.
Při tomto pietním aktu bylo položeno mnoho věnců – dokonce děti z místní základní školy položily svůj malý – tyto a mnoho předmětů zde umístěných toho dne bylo ponecháno na ukázku dalším návštěvníkům na mnoho následujících měsíců.
Mnoho vencov bolo položených počas ceremóne – aj deti s miestnej základnej školy, položili svoj skromný veniec – tieto a aj mnoho iných pôct bolo vzdaných v tento deň a ponechaných na úkážku ďalším návštevníkom na mnoho mesiacov dopredu.
The most successful Allied pilot of this battle was a Czechoslovak – Josef František, who shot down 17 Luftwaffe aircraft in a 28 day period. This is a remarkable achievement of which any nation would justifiably feel very proud.
Nejúspěšnějším spojeneckým pilotem této bitvy byl Čechoslovák – Josef František, jenž během 28 dnů sestřelil 17 letadel Luftwaffe. Toto je pozoruhodný výkon, na který by jakýkoliv národ cítil oprávněnou hrdost.
Najúspešnejším spojeneckým letcom tejto bitky bol čechoslovák – Sgt. Josef František, ktorý za zostrelil 17 lietadiel počas 28 dní. Toto je významný úspech, na ktorý by bol právom hrdý každý národ.
Also commemorated at the memorial are a further 88 Czechoslovak pilots. Of the 20 most successful Czechoslovak fighter pilots of WW2, 15 are named on this memorial.
Na památníku je připomenuto rovněž dalších 88 československých pilotů. Z dvaceti nejúspěšnějších čs. stíhacích pilotů za druhé světové války je jméno patnácti z nich uvedeno na tomto památníku.
Na pamätníku sú spomenuté mená ďalších 88 československých letcov. Z 20 najúspeš-nejších československých stíhačov, je 15 spomenutých na tomto pamätníku.
Sadly, 9 of these pilots did not survive this battle and a further 27 were killed before the end of the war. The last Czechoslovak Battle of Britain pilot – František Fajtl – passed away in 2006.
Bohužel, devět z těchto pilotů tuto bitvu nepřežilo a dalších 27 bylo zabito před skončením války. Poslední čs. pilot z Bitvy o Británii – František Fajtl – zemřel v roce 2006.
Žiaľ, deväť z nich neprežilo túto bitku a ďalších 27 bolo zabitých ešte pred koncom 2. svetovej vojny. Posledný žijúci československý pilot, ktorý sa zúčastnil Bitky o Britániu – František Fajtl – zomrel v roku 2006.
But where were the Government officials representing the Czechoslovak airmen?
Ale kde byli představitelé vlády zastupující československé letce?
Kde však boli vládni reprezentanti zastupujúci československých letcov?
Since 1993 the country of Czechoslovakia has become the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic – but neither of these two countries was represented at this annual ceremony or even ensured that a wreath was left on their behalf.
Od roku 1993 se Československo stalo Českou a Slovenskou republikou – ale žádná z těchto zemí nebyla na této každoroční akci zastoupena ani dokonce nezajistila, aby za ni byl položen věnec.
Od roku 1993 kedy z Československa vznikla Česká a Slovenská republika, nebola ani jedna republika zastúpená na tejto každoročnej ceremónií a ani nebolo zabezpečené aspoň položenie venca na ich účet.
What impression of these two countries was taken away by the many dignitaries and others who attended, or the many others around the world who read or listened to the media reports about this Ceremony.
Jaký dojem tyto dvě země zanechaly v mnoha osobnostech a ostatních, kteří na akci přišli, nebo v mnoha jiných po celém světě, kteří četli nebo slyšeli reportáže sdělovacích prostředků o tomto ceremoniálu.
Aký dojem z týchto dvoch krajín si mohli odniesť mnohí predstavitelia a ostatní, ktorí sa zúčastnili creemoniálu, alebo mnoho ďalších z celého sveta ktorí čítali alebo počúvali správy z médií o tomto ceremoniáli.
This website is run by descendants of some of the Czechoslovaks who served in the RAF in WW2. The view taken is that the total failure of the governments of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, to provide any form of representation at what is a particularly important anniversary year is a serious omission that must not be repeated. The only precedent to this is prior to the ‘Velvet Revolution’ of 1989 when those who fought to free their homeland from the Nazi occupiers became victims of persecution by the Communist regime that now controlled their country. Since then there is no acceptable excuse.
Tuto webovou stránku provozují potomci některých z Čechoslováků, kteří za druhé světové války sloužili v Královském letectvu. Zastáváme názor o totálním selhání vlád České a Slovenské republiky. Poskytnutí jakékoliv formy reprezentace na akci, jenž je zvláště důležitým každoročním výročím, je vážným opomenutím, které se nesmí opakovat. Jediným připodobněním k této události je situace před “Sametovou revolucí” 1989, kdy ti, jenž bojovali, aby osvobodili svou vlast od německých okupantů se stali oběťmi perzekucí komunistického režimu, jenž tehdy v zemi vládl. Od té doby to je nepřijatelná výmluva.
Táto stránka je prevádzkovaná potomkami niektorých Čechoslovákov, ktorí slúžili v RAF počas 2. svetovej vojny. Prijali sme názor, že neúčasť vlád Českej a Slovenskej republiky na ceremoniáli v tak významné výročie, je závažným zlyhaním a opomenutím, ktoré sa nesmie opakovať. Jediným precedensom v tejto veci je obdobie pred “Nežnou revolúciou”, pred rokom 1989, kedy tí, ktorí bojovali za oslobodenie svojej vlasti od nacistických okupantov, sa stali obeťami perzekúcie zo strany komunistického režimu, ktorý vtedy vládol ich krajine. Od tejto doby niet prijateľného ospravedlnenia.
Letters expressing concern about the non representation were sent to both the Czech and Slovak Defence Attachés at their London Embassies on 20 July 2010.
Dne 20. července 2010 byly českému i slovenskému vojenskému atašé zaslány na jejich velvyslanectví v Londýně dopisy vyjadřující znepokojení nad jejich neúčastí.
Listy vyjadrujúce znepokojenie nad neúčasťou, boli zaslané obidvom vojenským atašé Českej a Slovenskej republiky na ich ambasády v Londýne 20.7.2010.
A reply was received from the Slovak Defence Attaché and further dialogue is continuing.
Od slovenského vojenského přidělence jsme obdrželi odpověď a diskuse pokračuje i nadále..
Svoju odpoveď nám zaslal atašé Slovenskej republiky, s ktorým pokračujeme v dialógu.
Nothing, however, was heard from the Defence Attaché of the Czech Republic, not even the courtesy of an acknowledgement of the letter. In the absence of any response, a similar letter was therefore sent, on 29 September 2010, to the Czech Ambassador – the highest representative of the Czech Government in the UK. Whilst this letter produced a belated email response from the Defence Attaché, to date no reply has been received from the Ambassador. A follow up letter has now been sent to the Ambassador to advise that the matter of their non representation would be escalated.
Avšak vojenský atašé České republiky se vůbec neozval, dokonce ani se zdvořilostním potvrzením přijetí dopisu. Když jsme nedostali žádnou odpověď, poslali jsme z toho důvodu 29. září 2010 podobný dopis českému velvyslanci – nejvyššímu zástupci české vlády ve Spojeném království Velké Británie a Severního Irska. Tento dopis zatím měl za následek opožděnou odpověď emailem od vojenského přidělence a od velvyslance jsme až dosud nedostali reakci žádnou. Nyní je posílán velvyslanci dopis následný, jenž mu oznamuje, že záležitost jejich neúčasti bude řešena se vší vážností i nadále.
Avšak neobdržali sme odpoveď od vojenského pridelenca Českej republiky, ani zdvorilostné potvrdenie o obdržaní listu. Vzhľadom na to, že sme žiadnu odpoveď neobdržali, zaslali sme 29.9.2010 obdobný dopis českému veľvyslancovi, najvyššiemu predstaviteľovi českej vlády v Spojenom kráľovstve. Následkom tohto dopisu, sme obdržali oneskorenú ospoveď emailom od vojenského pridelenca. Následovný dopis bol zaslaný veľvyslancovi, s radou že tento prípad ich neúčasti na ceremónií by mohol byť eskalovaný.

Tato opožděná odpověď emailem ze dne 7. října 2010 sděluje následující důvody, proč Česká republika na této pietní akci nebyla reprezentována :
Oneskorená emailová odpoveď z 7.10.2010 uvýdza nasledujúce dôvody neúčasti predstaviteľov Českej republiky na tejto ceremónií:
‘I have been in London for sixteen months and personally taken part in some eighteen commemorations and at least three other events reminding Czechoslovak WWII veterans. At least one third of them were connected to this year’s 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain whether they took place in London or somewhere else. I am not counting any other individual meetings with veterans, their widows or relatives and any funerals which would likely double the nubmers mentioned above.
“Jsem v Londýně rok a čtyři měsíce a osobně jsem se zúčastnil asi na osmnácti vzpomínkových akcích a nejméně třech dalších událostech připomínající československé veterány druhé světové války. Alespoň třetina z nich se vztahovala k tomuto letošnímu 70. výročí Bitvy o Británii ať už se konaly v Londýně či někde jinde. Nepočítám žádná další soukromá setkání s veterány, jejich vdovami nebo příbuznými ani všechny ty pohřby, které pravděpodobně dvakrát znásobí akce uvedené výše.
Bol som v Londýne šestnásť mesiacov a osobne sa zúčastnil asi osemnástich spomienkových akcii a najmenej troch ďalších akcii pripomínajúcich si československých veteránov druhej svetovej vojny. Aspoň jedna tretina z nich bola napojená na tohtoročné 70. výročie Bitky o Britániu, či sa konala v Londýne alebo niekde inde. Nepočítam iné individuálne stretnutia s veteránmi, ich vdovami alebo príbuznými a všetky pohreby, ktoré by pravdepodobne zdvojnásobili čísla uvedené vyššie.
We always respond to all invitations of event organisers and in most cases positively. However, in case of the Battle of Britain commemoration in Capel-le-Ferne, Kent, which took place on Sunday 11th of July, 2010, we have not received any invitation. That is also the main reason why we did not attend the event. The fact that I was in the Czech Republic at that time is much less significant reason why I could not attend.
Vždy odpovídáme na všechna pozvání organizátorů akcí a ve většině případů kladně. Avšak v případě vzpomínky na Bitvu o Británii na Cape-le Ferne v Kentu, která byla pořádána v neděli 11. července 2010, jsme žádnou pozvánku neobdrželi. To je také hlavní důvod, proč jsme na akci nebyli. Skutečnost, že jsem v té době byl v České republice, je mnohem méně důležitým důvodem, proč jsem tam nešel.
Vždy sme reagovali na všetky výzvy organizátorov akcii a vo väčšine prípadov pozitívne. Avšak v prípade osláv Bitky o Britániu v Capel-Le-Ferne, Kent, ktoré sa konali v nedeľu 11.7.2010, sme nedostali žiadnu pozvánku. To je hlavným dôvodom, prečo sme sa nezúčastnili podujatia. Skutočnosť, že som bol v tom čase v Českej republike, je oveľa menej podstatným dôvodom, prečo som sa nemohol zúčastniť.
Concerning Sergeant Josef Frantisek I laid a wreath at his grave in Northwood cemetery at the end of this May when current mayoress of his native Czech village Otaslavice along with another dozens of people from there came to London and asked me for support. Moreover, my assistant paid honour to Sgt Frantisek at Northwood cemetary just today, laying a wreath on the day of 96th anniversary of Sgt Frantisek’s birthday and 60th anniversary of his decease.
Co se týká četaře Josefa Františka, letos koncem května jsem položil k jeho hrobu věnec na hřbitově Northwood, když současná starostka jeho rodné obce Otaslavic přijela do Londýna s několika desítkami lidmi odtud a požádala mě o podporu. Navíc můj pobočník uctil seržanta Josefa Františka , když na hřbitově Northwood právě dnes položil věnec k devadesátému šestému výročí jeho narození a šedesátému od jeho úmrtí.
Pokiaľ ide o seržanta Josefa Františka, položil som veniec pri jeho hrobe na cintoríne v Northwood koncom mája tohto roku, kedy súčasná starostka jeho rodnej českej obce Otaslavice spolu s ďalšími desiatkami občanov Otaslavíc, prišli do Londýna a požiadali ma o pomoc. Navyše, môj asistent vzdal práve dnes poctu Sgt Františkovi na cintoríne Northwoode, keď položil veniec v deň 96. výročia narodenia Sgt. Františka a 60. výročia jeho úmrtia.
I would like you to know that people at the Czech Embassy in London and particularly we, (just two) soldiers serving at the Defence Attache Office, do our best to commemorate all the Czechoslovak heroes of WWII including those fighting in the Battle of Britain. Obviously, we are not able to attend all the events across the UK, therefore we have to always consider our presence or participation with giving priority to events attended also by Czech top political or military representatives as well as veterans.’
Byl bych rád, abyste věděli, že lidé na Velvyslanectví České republiky v Londýně a konkrétně my – pouze dva – vojáci, kteří slouží v Úřadu vojenského přidělence, děláme, co je v našich silách, abychom připomenuli všechny československé hrdiny druhé světové války včetně těch, jenž bojovali v Bitvě o Británii. Samozřejmě, nejsme schopni navštívit všechny akce po Spojeném království a proto musíme vždy zvažovat naši přítomnost nebo účast a dáváme přednost akcím navštíveným rovněž českými vrcholnými politickými nebo vojenskými představiteli stejně jako veterány.”
Chcel by som, aby ste vedeli, že ľudia na českej ambasáde v Londýne, a to najmä my, (iba dvaja) vojaci slúžiaci v úrade Vojenského atašé, robíme to najlepšie čo je v našich silách na pamiatku všetkých československých hrdinov druhej svetovej vojny, vrátane tých, ktorí bojovali v Bitke o Britániu. Je zrejmé, že nie sme schopní zúčastňovať sa všetkých podujatí po celej Británii, preto musíme vždy zvážiť našu prítomnosť alebo účasť s dôrazom na akcie, ktorých sa zúčastňujú aj českí vrcholní politickí a vojenskí predstavitelia, rovnako ako aj veteráni.”

Even in these current austere times it is difficult to believe that the logistics of ensuring representation – in person or by just a wreath – is beyond the resources available to the Czech Authorities, particularly to such a significant event as the commemoration of the Battle of Britain which was the first turning point in WW2. This particular commemoration however was of particular significance as it was the 70th Anniversary of that Battle.
Dokonce v dnešních strohých časech je těžké uvěřit, že zorganizování ujištění o účasti – osobně či pouze věncem – je nad možnosti, jimiž české úřady disponují, zvláště při události takové důležitosti, jako je připomenutí Bitvy o Británii, která byla prvním bodem obratu v první světové válce. Navíc,tato akce byla obzvláště důležitá, protože šlo o sedmdesáté výročí této bitvy.
Aj v dnešných časoch je ťažké sa domnievať, že logistika zabezpečenia zastúpenia – osobného alebo formou venca – je mimo zdroje, ktoré majú k dispozícii české orgány, a to najmä pre také významné udalosti, ako pripomenutie si Bitky o Britániu, ktoré bolo prvým bodom obratu v 2. svetovej vojne. Toto konkrétne pripomenutie však malo osobitný význam, pretože to bola oslava 70. výročia tejto udalosti.
The most successful pilot of the Battle of Britain, Josef František, was Czechoslovak, and it is therefore very surprising that if an invitation was not received, the Czech Embassy did not contact the events organiser to ensure that this mistake was corrected. It has been confirmed to us that the Czech Embassy were invited to this Ceremony – as they had been in previous years.
Nejúspěšnější stíhací pilot Bitvy o Británii, Josef František, byl Čechoslovák, a proto je velmi překvapivé, že když Velvyslanectví ČR pozvání na akci neobdrželo, nekontaktovalo její organizátory, aby zajistilo, že tato chyba bude napravena. Bylo nám potvzeno, že představitelé Velvyslanectví České republiky pozváni byli, jako v letech minulých.
Najúspešnejším pilotom Bitky o Britániu bol Josef František, Čechoslovák a je veľmi prekvapujúce, že keď ambasáda Českej republiky neobdržala pozvanie na túto spomienkovú akciu, nekontaktovala organizátorov aby napravili túto chybu. Bolo nám potvrdené ambasáda Českej republiky bola pozvaná na túto ceremóniu, tak ako tomu bolo aj po minulé roky.
Was it just a coincidence that as there are now no longer any surviving Czechoslovak pilots who flew in the Battle of Britain there was no representation from the Czech Government or the Military?
Bylo pouze souhrou okolností, že když už nyní žádný z československých pilotů, jenž bojoval v Bitvě o Británii, nežije, nikdo českou vládu ani armádu nereprezentuje ?
Bola to len náhoda, že keď už niet žijúcich československých letcov, ktorí sa aktívne zúčastnili Bitky o Britániu, tak sa na spmienke nezúčastnili ani predstavitelia českej vlády alebo ozbrojených síl?
The number of Czechoslovaks – men and women – who served in the RAF (whether in the Czech and Slovak Republics, the United Kingdom, or elsewhere in the world) is now very small with many infirmed or in care homes. Sadly, before too long there will be no ‘Czechoslovak’ RAF veterans with us. If ‘attendance of veterans’ is used as the criteria for attendance at ceremonies, will the Czech and Slovak Authorities walk even further away from their responsibilities then!
Počet Čechoslováků – mužů i žen – kteří byli příslušníky Královského vojenského letectva / ať v Čechách či na Slovensku, v Británii nebo jinde na světě /, je nyní velmi malý a mnoho z nich je delší dobu nemocných nebo v pečovatelských ústavech. Bohužel, během nedlouhé doby už žádný “Československý” veterán RAF na světě nebude. Jestliže se “ přítomnost veteránů” používá jako kritérium pro účast na pietních akcích, pak se české I slovenské úřady budou od své zodpovědnosti vzdalovat I nadále!
Počet Čechoslovákov – mužov a žien – ktorí slúžili v RAF (či už z Českej alebo Slovenskej republiky, v Spojenom kráľovstve alebo inej časti sveta) je v súčastnosti veľmi malý s mnohými nemohúcimi alebo v domoch s opatrovateľskou starostlivosťou. Je smutné, že tak skoro predtým, než tu už nebude žiadny veterán RAF z Československa. Ak “účasť veteránov” je používaná ako kritérium pre účasť na ceremóniách, potom sa budú české a slovenské úrady ešte viac vzďaľovať od svojej zodpovednosti!
It is disturbing that a nation’s representation at such ceremonies is conditional on the schedules of ‘top political or military representatives’. There are always going to be logistical problems where the ceremonies are held in the UK and not in the Czech or Slovak Republics.
Je znepokojující, že zastoupení národa na takových údálostech je podmíněno harmonogramy činnosti “nejvyšších politických nebo vojenských činitelů”. Organizační problémy se vyskytnou vždy, když se pietní shromáždění konají ve Spojeném království, a nikoliv v České nebo Slovenské republice.
Je znepokojujúce ak zastúpenie oboch národov na týchto ceremóniách je podmienené účasťou “vrcholných politických a vojenských predstaviteľov”. Vždy sa tam môžu vyskytnúť logistické problémy ak sa ceremónie budú konať v Spojenom kráľovstve a nie v Českej alebo v Slovenskej republike.
Whilst this article was being prepared a response, to the last letter, was received from the Czech Ambassador in London. It stated that an invitation for this event had ‘not been received’ but that ‘it will be my honour to attend the ceremony in future provided an invitation is made and received’.
Zatímco byl připravován tento článek, dostali jsme odpověď na poslední dopis od Velvyslance České republiky v Londýně. Sdělil, ze pozvání k této události “před ní neobdržel”, ale že “mu bude ctí se ceremoniálu v budoucnu zúčastnit za předpokladu, že bude pozván a toto vyrozumění dostane”.
Počas prípravy tohto článku, obdržali sme odpoveď na posledný dopis od českého veľvyslanca v Londýne. Uviedol, že neobdržal pozvanie na túto akciu, ale že “mu bude cťou zúčastniť sa ceremónie v budúcnosti, za predpokladu, že obdrží pozvanie”.

There is no justifiable reason why the endeavors and sacrifices of the Czechoslovak RAF men and women should be reduced to a logistical or communication problem, or be dependent on a whim, of some official department.
Není žádný ospravedlnitelný důvod, proč by úsilí a oběti československých příslušníků RAF měly být zmenšeny na problém organizace nebo komunikace, nebo závislé na chvilkovém rozmaru nějaké úřední kanceláře.
Neexistuje žiadny ospravedlniteľný dôvod, prečo by úsilie a obete československých mužov a žien, príslušníkov Royal Air Force, malo byť znížené na logistický alebo komunikačný problém, či závisieť na rozmare nejakého vládneho rezortu, úrádu.

Zasluhují si právo být uctívání

Can only re-iterate many of the previous comments on this topic. A very sad and disappointing story to read.
These 88 Czech lads are owed a big thank you for their part in the Battle of Britain – they did all that was asked of them for their country.
Lamentable excuses why their country failed to remember these brave airmen.
Having seen this battle as a boy, I appreciate that in 1940 Britain needed all the help it could muster to fight the Nazi’s. These young men gave England some of that help, some died giving hat help.
We owe it to them that they are remembered and respected.
They must not be ignored again!
We should be happy that they fought for our countrys freedom otherwise our life would be very different today. These brave men must be remembered not forgotton.
I am only grateful for what these brave young pilots did for the allied forces in 1940. They deserve better treatment than this.

What short memories our government has!
They should remember where our country would be if it was not for these brave overseas airmen from our country.
Our overseeas airmen fought and died so that there homeland would be free from the German occupiers. Some paid for our freedom and liberty with there lives. Our countries officials must remember the sacrifices these pilots made. There action is required not shameful excuses.
Appalled by the Nazi invasion of their country, these young airmen, with great courage, crossed Europe often with dubious papers and initially fought for the French. After the fall of France, they again, with great courage, crossed the Channel to join the RAF. Their role in the Battle of Britain reflected their tremendous committment.
We must never forget them. Of course we have to face the fact that the British Govt treated them with disrespect after the end of the war.
Even so the feeble response of the Czech representatives as regards the Memorial Ceremony can only be deplored.
Let us hope that it does not happen again.

There can be no excuse for not honouring the contribution that Czech airmen made in defeating the Nazis.
They fought the Germans in France before coming to Great Britain to defend our shores from the threat of invasion.
For me they deserve special recognition as they were charged with the defence of North West England and Liverpool.
Two of them, Jindřich Bartoš and Otto Hanzlíček, gave their lives doing this and were laid to rest in a cemetery in Liverpool.
I am proud to tend their graves and to leave a cross there each Remembrance Sunday.

A very serious and sad error by the Czech Embassy personnel, a pity they did not feel able to admit to their shortcomings and apologise rather than beat about the bush and make matters worse. Their attendance at all future ceremonies to remember Czech RAF airmen is a must !!
ex RAF aircrew myself and this is such a sad story to read. I can only hope that whoever screwed up or made the decision not to attend this Ceremony is proud of themselves!
These were brave pilots who fought for us when England needed every fighter pilot it we could get.
These men did not fail us in 1940, they should not be failed now.
Not again for our airmen who flew in the west.
they left our Republic in 1939 so that they could fight the Nazis for the freedom of homeland
they were not permitted to return to there homeland till 3 months after the war ended
they came home as heroes in August 1945
with the Communist power in Feburary 1948 they were treated as traitors to there homeland and suffered harshly
after Communism in 1989 they were rehabilitated and were heroes again
now there government ignores them

Very surprising behaviour from the Czechs representing their country, nothing they have any reason to be proud of. Pitiful excuses not what is expected from a government representatives.
They should take note of the comments from Czechoslovaks who have posted their comments here to show that they support these pilots.
As a veteran myself, who still lives in the area where the Battle of Britain was fought, I can only value the contribution and valour of the Allied Battle of Britain pilots.
It is incomprehensible how this Embassy, whose role it is to represent their Country, failed in their duty to honour their Countries servicemen, some of whom paid the ultimate price.
I can only be greatful that these Czechoslovak pilots had no problems in receiving their ‘invitation’ to join the RAF in 1940!

Our civic associoation Czech Spitfire Club has motto “We don’t forget”… we carry these heroes in our hearts and try to popularize them among other people.

This does not read that much effort was made by the Czech authorities to represent their airmen at this ceremony.
As a ex RAF serviceman I can only consider that these are just pitiful excuses from the Embassy.
These airmen served their country, it can only be considered shameful that the Czech authorities failed to serve their country by remembering their airmen.
Můj názor je takový, že každý člověk musí mít toto v srdci – úctu k padlým a jejich činům. Vláda ta je jen odrazem společnosti. Já sám jsem vybudoval v naší obci – rodišti Vlkoš u Kyjova Military muzeum generála Sergěje Jana Ingra ministra obrany Československé exilové vlády v Londýně. A dnes horko těžko udržuji chod tohoto muzea, jen proto, že nejsem státní, ale soukromý. Když někdo věnuje nějaké prostředky na muzeum a jeho chod, jsou to lidé a nebo potomci těch co bojovali. Ti jsou tak vychovaní k úctě a tradicím. Jde proto o výchovu mládeže, ta je špatná ! Tam se musí začít… ČEST JEJICH PAMÁTCE – REPUBLICE ZDAR

In our community – the birthplace of General Sergei Jan Ingra, Defense Minister of the Czechoslovak Government in Exile in London – I have established the military museum at Vlkoš near Kyjov, CR.
In current times, it is difficult to keep this museum going, as it is privately funded and receives no state funds. If somebody donates any funds to support the operation of the museum it is from people who were fighting or their descendants. These people were brought up to respect others and traditions. But young people today know little of this heritage and we should concentrate on informing them.

A sad oversight, or indifference, in view of the heroic contributions by Czech and Slovak pilots in the defence of this country. The large crowds at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day show that, even when many or all of the combatants have passed on, there is yet a time to pause, to respect and remember. The Czech and Slovak authorities owe a debt to these true heroes who fought and often gave their lives to protect freedom . This debt should have been and must in future be honoured .

I am so shamed to read this. Our foreign airmen do not deserve to be ignorned by our country.
As the son-in-law of Karel Kuttelwascher the Czech night intruder ace, I welcome anything that keeps alive the memory of all the Czechs and Slovaks who fought for freedom in the Second World War. It is wonderful to see younger people taking up the cause of keeping their record in the public domain.
This doesn’t suggest that there was much interest from the Embassy in ensuring the Czechoslovak pilots were remembered at ths Ceremony. Its not a new event, having been in existence since 1993, it would show on their records that they had attended in previous years. If no invitation was received why was no contact made with the organisers to resolve this problem?
Its not the role of a host country to advise a foreign embassy how to conduct themselves in how the want to remember their own airmen. Nor is it the place of the organisers to inquire why someone does not want to attend their event.
However it is the role of a country to ensure that its combatants, who participated in this battle, are suitably remembered and that has not happened here which is poor.
bad news this, our foriegn airmen must be remembered for the goodness they gave our country, it is wrong to ignore them.
Not unsurprising as I think most ‘new’, young diplomats only pay lip service to such things and, as in this case, simply do not care what has gone on in the past. It doesnt really affect them and unlike the British and Americans not the sort to dwell on past events – probably something to do with their communist background.

The Battle of Britain was the most significant air conflict the world has ever seen and our lives in Europe today would be quite different, for the worse, if those 2936 young Allied pilots had failed in the task they were asked to do.
These Czechoslovak pilots risked their own lives as well as putting their relatives in their homeland in jeopardy because they came to England to fight the Nazi’s oppression.
They should be honored and remembered by their country not forgotten or ignored.

Eva Juranová’s comment goes neatly straight to the point – I think I wouldn’t hesitate to have her as a gunner. 🙂 My take on the subject is a bit broader:
We have two conflicting statements – embassy claims they weren’t invited, organizers claim they invited them. With all respect, and regardless of the way the Czech RAF personnel were treated in the past, I would think that organizers should’ve done more before the event, if they didn’t receive any response from the embassy. That’s what being an organizer means.
As far as Raymond’s “There is no justification for High Up staff to not know anything about a ceremony of their own countrymen in a foreign land”, I think there is, and it is hidden right in Raymond’s own words – ambassadorial staff really are in a foreign country and need any help they can get to function well in the tiniest details, amongst which are any ceremonies.
As far as “…The only precedent to this is prior to the ‘Velvet Revolution’ of 1989…” goes, let me remind you that this Memorial was only unveiled in 1993 and that the United Kingdom made sure that former Czechoslovakia paid for all the sacrifices the Czechoslovak airmen made at the time of UK and USA were “returning” the Czechoslovak national gold that used to back up the Cz. currency.
I would also like to steer you towards Veronika’s and Mr. Hooper’s comment which suggests that treatment of “the few” was somewhat questionable right during the battle. (I can understand that Czechs/Slovaks wouldn’t claim them as their own because many of the airmen were protecting their relatives in the German-occupied Czech-Slovak homeland, however I find it hard to understand why the UK had problems to do so.)
And speaking of injustices, let me also remind you of the history of the beautiful Czech movie “Dark Blue World” when it was nominated for the Oscar – it was refused on the basis that its story is untrue. No further comments needed here, I think.
So let me close by saying what has already been said and should be well written in our hearts: lest WE forget!

‘Lest we forget’ comes to mind. I think it’s disgusting that an Embassy pretends not to have received an invitation. There is no justification for High Up staff to not know anything about a ceremony of their own countrymen in a foreign land. Perhaps a ‘signed for’ invitation is what they want!
I’m afraid this sort of attitude is all to common in so many areas of life today. How soon they forget.
It was bad enough that both the Polish and Czechoslovak airmen who defended our country when we needed them most were treated so badly by the British Government at the end of WW2 but there can be no excuse for this lack of respect from the present representatives of the old Czechoslovakia. I know I speak for all members of the Royal Air Force, past and present, “We will Remember Them”
What a shame the Czech and Slovak Embassies did not find time to visit this ceremony and remember those who fought for freedom in the Battle of Britain! Foreign nationals from occupied territories had to risk their lives only to get out of their home country, in order to participate in this war. As described in detail in the study Airmen in Exile, by Dr Alan Brown, these people were distrusted and mistreated all the way through, and their legal status in the battlefield was very often very unclear. Should they be unlucky enough to become POWs, no side would claim them as their own combatants, and invest enough resources for their rescue.
Poor show.
There was a TV program on BBC in the early ’90’s called ‘The Forgotten Men’ and was about how the Czech RAF men were treated badly by their government when the communists took control. Nearly 20 years since that program, it looks as if not much has changed!
no person what ever nationality who fought in the battle for britain should be forgotten to ensure it is never required again.
