Operation Overlord – 82nd Anniversary

On the 82nd Anniversary of Operation Overloard [D-Day], remembering the Czechoslovak RAF airmen who were lost participating in the build up to that day and the subsequent Battle of Normandy.

Twenty-three Czechoslovak airmen serving in the RAF who were killed during the Battle of Normandy, and are included amongst the 22,442 names on the The British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer, Calvados.

S/Ldr Jiří Hartman DFC was, at that time a F/Lt with 310 Sqn, and was ‘A’ Flight Commander (Red 1) at the time of D-Day – the Allied invasion of Europe on 6 June 1944. At that time all three Czechoslovak fighter squadrons; 310 Sqn, 312 Sqn and 313 Sqn – the Czechoslovak Wing – were deployed at RAF Apuldram, near Chichester, Sussex.
