Project CzRAF 100

The graves of 240 Czechoslovak RAF airmen and 1 Czechoslovak WAAF who lost their lives during their WW2 RAF service, are to be found in numerous cemeteries located around the United Kingdom. A further 149 Czechoslovak airmen, who have no known grave, are commemorated at the Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede.

Hroby 240 československých letců RAF a 1.

With 2018 being not only the 100th anniversary of the formation of the RAF, but also the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state of Czechoslovakia, on 28 October 1918, and also the 100th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Air Force, we, at the Free Czechoslovak Air Force Associates ltd, decided to commemorate these anniversaries in our own special way – Project CzRAF 100.

The original concept behind Project CzRAF 100 was that we would commemorate 100 of the CzRAF graves in regional cemeteries around the UK, by placing a red, white and blue carnation bouquet – the Czech national colours – with a traditional Czech tricolour ribbon at each headstone. However, on reaching out to the UK CzRAF community, we were overwhelmed with the level of support – within 24 hours of launching the project, our target of 100 graves was well surpurpassed.

Thus we escalated the original project to now include all 240 graves and Runnymede as well, at the 79 locations around the UK as shown on the map below. This extent of CzRAF commemoration in the UK is something that has never been achieved before.

With further engaging with the UK CzRAF community and other organisations, we successfully achieved sufficient support to ensure complete coverage of all the 240 graves. The results of Project CzRAF 100 are below.

  4. Paul Woolman says:

Many brave men and women from mainland Europe contributed to the fight against Nazi Germany with sustained courage. The whole world owes a great debt to them and many others from the nations that responded to the challenge and defeated the tyrants, particularly to the UK and to the Commonwealth who at one time were the sole opposition to the Nazi scourge.
