commemorating the return of the Czechoslovak RAF squadrons
to Prague in August 1945

Slavnostní odhalení nového památníku
na počest návratu československích perutí v RAF
do Prahy v srpnu 1945

The Memorial was unveiled ay 11:00 on 24th August 2015 in a small park outside the original Prague Ruzyne airport terminal and today its Terminal 3.

Památník byl odhalen 24. srpna 2015 v parčíku před původní budovou letiště Ruzyně, která slouží v současné době jako Terminál 3.

It was a well executed one-hour-long event, quite well attended by official guests as well as public, despite the scant publicity in the media.

Byl to pěkně zorganizovaný hodinový ceremoniál za účasti významných hostů i početného publika i přes skromnou propagaci v mediích.

The official invitations to the ceremony went out on behalf of Spolecnost patriotu Slanska (Association of the Patriots of Slany region near Prague), who conceived the idea of this Memorial – Milan Špineta to name just one, as well as Sdruzeni cs. zahranicnich letcu 1939-1945 (the Association of the Czechoslovak airmen abroad 1939-1945), the village of Touzetin in cooperation with the Army of the Czech Republic, District of Prague 6, Czechoslovak Aeroholding Ltd and Prague’s Václav Havel Airport.

Oficiální pozvánky na slavnost byly zasílány Společností patriotů Slánska, která přišla s nápadem na památnik: Milan Špineta byl jedním z iniciátorů, a také jménem Sdružení čs. zahraničních letců 1939-1945, vesnice Toužetín ve spolupríci s Armádou České republiky, městské části Praha 6, Československým Aeroholdingem Ltd a Letištěm (Václava Havla) Praha.

The patrons of the Memorial are Mr.Ing. Milos Zeman, the President of the Czech Republic; Mr. Milan Štěch, Chairman of the Senate; Mr. Andrej Babiš vice-chairman of the Government and the Minister of Finances; Mgr. Martin Stropnický – Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic, Mgr Ondrěj Kolář – Mayor Prague 6 District and Mgr Dagmar Havlová, Chair of the Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation VIZE 97.

Patrony památníku jsou pan ing. Miloš Zeman, president České republiky; pan Milan Štech, předseda senátu ČR; pan Andrej Babiš, místopředseda vlády a ministr financí; pan Mgr Martin Stropnický, ministr obrany ČR; pan Mgr Ondrej Kolář, starosta Prahy 6 a paní Mgr Dagmar Havlová, předsedkyně nadace Václava a Dagmar Havlových VIZE 97.

Besides members of the public, there were also representatives of the Czech Government, the Army of the Czech Republic. Members of several veterans’ and patriotic Associations like Československá obey legionářská (Czechoslovak Legionaries Association), Český svaz bojovníků za svobodu (Association of the Fighters for Freedom) and Junak (Czech Scouting group) were present as well, even though they hadn’t received official invitations. Also several Czechoslovak RAF veterans arrived – Gen Emil Boček ex 310 Sqn, Col Pavel Vranský, ex 311 Sqn, and Col Alois Dubec, Depot ground staff.

Vedle představitelů vlády České republiky, ozbrojených sil ČR a veřejnosti byli na slavnosti přítomni také členové několika veteránských a vlasteneckých organizací např. Československé obce legionářské, Svazu českých bojovníků za svobodu a Junáka. Také přijelo několik z posledních československých veteránů RAF– plk Pavel Vranský z 311. perutě RAF, gen Emil Boček z 310. perutě, a plk. Alois Dubec.

However, rather surprising was the complete absence of any representatives of the British Embassy, the RAF, or the British ex-pat community in Prague.

Nicméně velmi překvapující byla naprostá nepřítomnost zástupců britského velvyslanectví v ČR či RAF, nebo komunity Britů žijících v Praze.

The ceremony opened under the RAF blue skies and in lovely breeze. The Prague Castle Guard of Honour stood at the Memorial and its other members took places at the respective wreaths and the small delegations which were going to place them.

Slavnost začala pod nebem modrým jak na vlajce RAF a za příjemného vánku. Čestná Stráž Pražského hradu zaujala místa u památníku a jeji další členové se seřadili s věnci a delegacemi těch, kdo věnce měli klást.

The Call to Attention was sounded and the Master of Ceremonies – Mr. Stanislav Berkovec, deputy and one of the Patriots of Slaný, welcomed all the attending. Exactly at 11am two JAS 39 Gripen aircraft flew above our heads, made a circle above the Ruzyněe airport and in their attempt to get a closer look at the Memorial almost literally blew us off our feet: everybody was well impressed!

Po zaznění znělky Pozor moderátor slavnosti pan Stanislav Berkovec, poslanec a slánský patriot, přivítal všechny přítomné.Přesně v 11 hod dva letouny Jas 39 Gripen přelétly nad našimi hlavami, zakroužily nad letištěm Ruzyně a ve snaze podívat se zblízka na nový památník nás téměř doslova smetly s plochy: všichni byli nadšeni!

Introductory speech presented by Col. Ing. Václav Vašek followed. He summed up the history of the Czechoslovak airmen in WW II and in the RAF, as well as many of the airmen’s ill fortunes during the communist Czechoslovakia after 1948.

Úvodní řeč přednesl plk. Ing. Václav Vašek. Shrnul v ní přehled dějin československých letců za 2. světové války a v RAF, a také jejich často tragické osudy v komunistickém Československu po r. 1948.

Then the actual unveiling of the Memorial took place. It was unveiled by one of the Czechoslovak RAF veterans present – Gen Emil Boček; Lt Gen Ing Josef Bečvář – Chief of Staff of the Army of the Czech Republic; Mrs Miluse Horská, Vice-Chair of the Senate of the Czech Republic, Mrs Dagmar Havlová – the wife of the late President Václav Havel and Chair person of the VIZE 97 Foundation and Mr. Martin Zajicek, architect of the memorial.

Poté následovalo samotné odhalení památníku. Provedli ho společně brigádní generál Emil Boček, bývalý veterán 310. Perutě RAF; náčelník generálního štábu AČR Ing. Josef Bečvář; paní Miluše Horská – místopředsedkyně Senátu Parlamentu ČR; paní Dagmar Havlová, přededkyně nadace Dagmar a Václava Havlových VIZE 97 a pan Martin Zajíček, autor památníku.

The memorial was veiled in a silk army parachute, which during its removal expanded gently like a big cumulus in the summer sky in the breeze – a symbolic sight!

Památník byl zahalen do armádního hedvábného padáku, který se vánkem při odhalování lehce rozpínal jako obrovský letní cumulus – krásná symbolika!

After the unveiling the wreaths were placed to the tune of the funeral march Pax Vobis by Julius Fučík First by the representatives of the Czech Government, the Army of the Czech Republic, Prague 6 District, the town of Mělník, the Region of Ústí nad Labem. A classic British poppy wreath was placed by Mrs. Milena Kolaříková-Lock on behalf of Lest We Forget Battlefield Tours – Flanders and the FCAFA Associates, accompanied for the occasion by the representatives of the Czech Freedom Fighters Association – ex RAF Cz airman Col. Pavel Vranský formerly of 311 Sqn and the Secretary of CSBS Mr. Emil Cigánik. The last floral tribute in the colours of the Czechoslovak tricolor was placed by the representatives of the village of Toužetín.

Po odhalení byly za zvuků smutečního pochodu Pax Vobis od Julia Fučíka položeny věnce představiteli vlády a armády ČR, městské části Praha 6, města Mělník a kraje Ústí na Labem. Klasický věnec z vlčích máků, jaké se tradují ve Velké Británii, jménem průvodcovské společnosti Lest We Forget Battlefield Tours – Flanders a asociace FCAFA položila Milena Kolaříková-Lock, při této příležitosti doprovázena představiteli ČSBS plk. Pavlem Vranským, bývalým členem 311. perutě RAF, a Emilem Cigánikem- tajemníkem ČSBS. Poslední věnec v barvách československé trikolory byl položen zástupci vesnice Toužetín.

It was a very touching moment standing there with bowed head thinking of all of those pilots and airmen, who did return only to be later persecuted for their patriotism, and remembering those, who never made it home, like Karel Pavlík buried in Ypres, Václav Jícha in Scotland, Stanislav Fejfar in France, Alois Vášátko in the English Channel and many many others… It was a very quiet moment of sad contemplation.

Byla to skutečně dojemná chvíle, stát před památníkem se sklopenou hlavou v zamyšlení nad všemi našimi letci, kteří se před 70 lety vrátili domů do Prahy a z nichž mnozí byli později pro své vlastenectví persekvováni, a vzpomínajíc na stovky těch, kteří se domů nevrátili nikdy, jako byl Karel Pavlík pohřbený v Yprech v Belgii, Václav Jícha ve Skotsku, Stanislav Fejfar ve Francii, Alois Vašátko v chladných vodách La Manche a mnoho mnoho dalších, kteří doslova položili život za naši vlast a také za naši svobodu…Byl to velmi tichý moment smutné kontemplace.

In the following official speeches without exception expressed the gratitude to the Czech and Slovak men and women in the RAF; they were praised for their patriotism, dedication and valiant struggle for freedom and their home country. The speakers reminded us that without men and women like them, our country would never be free, that we must never forget their sacrifice and be always ready to fight again for our home country if need be. To teach the children the value of patriotism is one of our most important tasks.

Následné projevy bez výjimky vyjadřovaly vděčnost Čechům a Slovákům v RAF, mužům i ženám, za jejich patriotismus, oddanost věci a statečný boj za svobodu a za vlast. Řečníci do jednoho zdůrazňovali, že bez mužů a žen jako byli oni, by naše vlast nebyla osvobozena a my nesmíme nikdy zapomenout jejich obětí. Musíme být také připraveni za svobodu naší vlasti opět bojovat, bude-li to nutné. Vštěpovat myšlenku vlastenectví dětem je jednou z našich nejdůležitějších povinností.

Lt Gen Bečvář also rightly praised the Cech Air Force since WW II, the courage and skills of our airmen demonstrated recently during various NATO missions, in the tradition of their former comrades in arms.

Náčelník GŠ AČR gen. Bečvář také chvalně promluvil o našem vojenském letectvu v poválečných letech a při současných misích v NATO; ocenil odvahu a zručnost našich novodobých letců, v tradici jejich předchůdců ve zbrani.

Mr. Martin Zajíček was then invited to explain the symbolism of his design of the Memorial. He mentioned that he didn’t wish to create a grim memorial to the fallen, but a bright one to the returning living. The material used is (Czech) polished granite symbolising durability, reliability, resistance; the Memorial was constructed in the shape of a triumphal gate – to commemorate the proud return of the heroes home. There are two images of etched Spitfire fighter planes on the central transparent glass panel, through which the sky can be seen above the trees in the park. On the front face of the granite gate are the four badges of the Czechoslovak Squadrons within the RAF – 310, 311, 312 and 313 and above them the current Czech Air Force badge.

Poté byl pozván pan Zajíček, aby promluvil o symbolice nového památníku. Zmínil se o tom, že si nepřál vytvořit chmurný pomník padlým, ale “jasný” památník navracejícím se živým. Památník je vyroben z (české) leštěné žuly – symbol trvanlivosti, odolnosti a spolehlivosti a je ve tvaru vítězné brány na počest hrdého návratu hrdinů do vlasti. Na centrálním průhledném panelu ze skla jsou vyleptané dvě stíhačky Spitfire (Mk V)a je jím možné též vidět nebe nad stromy v parčíku. Přední stranu žulové brány zdobí znaky čtyř československých perutí v RAF – 310., 311., 312., a 313. Nad nimi je umístěn emblém současného letectva AČR.

The Memorial was made by Daha stonemasons in Nehvizdy. Perhaps an interesting coincidence, because it was in the vicinity of this small village near Prague, where Jan Kubiš and Jan Gabčík – two of the most important heroes of the Czech resistance during WW II – were dropped by an RAF aircraft on 27th December 1941 and spent their first night hidden in a cave of a disused granite quarry.

Památník byl vyroben kamenickou firmou Daha v Nehvizdech. Možná zajímavá souvislost, protože na okraji této vesnice byli 27.12.1941 vysazeni z letadla RAF dva z nejvýznamnějších hrdinů 2.československého odboje – Jan Kubiš a Jan Gabčík, a strávili zde svou první noc v jeskyni již nepoužívaného lomu na žulu.

The Master of Ceremonies then thanked the representatives of LOM Praha, a aircraft manufacturing company, for their major financial sponsorship of the Memorial.

Moderátor poté poděkoval představitelům firmy LOM Praha, výrobcům leteckých strojů, za jejich finanční podporu při tvorbě památníku.

Cardinal Dominik Duka, the Archbishop of Prague and himself a son of an RAF airman, concluded by a brief patriotic speech about the Czechoslovak airmen during WW II, their love for our home country, their sacrifice for freedom of us all. He remembered them, blessed them and blessed all of the present and the Memorial in a simple but poignant way.

Kardinál Dominik Duka, arcibiskup pražský a sám syn československého letce RAF, pronesl v závěru slavnosti krátkou vlasteneckou řeč věnovanou československým letcům v 2. světové válce, jejich lásce pro vlast, jejich oběti pro svobodu nás všech. Vzpomněl na ně, požehnal jim, požehnal všem přítomným a památníku jednoduše a navýsost smysluplně.

Then the Czech Army Band’s trumpet player sounded the Last Post followed by one minute of silence and the Band of the Army of the Czech Republic concluded the ceremony by playing the three national anthems – Slovak, British and Czech.

Nato trubač Hudby AČR zatroubil Večerku, po které následovala minuta ticha na paměť padlých a Hudba AČR zahrála tři národní hymny – slovenskou, britskou a českou.Tím byla slavnost ukončena.

After a photo session with the illustrious official participants, RAF Czechoslovak veterans and the wives of the deceased RAF airmen, many attended a small, pleasant and informal reception in the airport Terminal 3 building, where people rememberd, refreshed themselves and signed dedicated Unveiling Certificates.

Po fotografickém intermezzu s významnými účastníky odhalení památníku, veterány RAF a manželkami bývalých “rafáků” odešli mnozí na malou recepci do budov Terminálu 3. Zde se vzpomínalo, konverzovalo u chutného pohoštění a podepisovaly se pěkné pamětní diplomy.

Sincere thanks for a beautiful and meaningful morning to the organisers, all those who attended the ceremony and the Army of the Czech Republic for their Guard of Honour and the musical accompaniment by the excellent Music Band of the Army of the Czech Republic. French writer and wartime pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote: ”Heroes don´t die, they transform into the sky and that blue sky together with the sun and the stars glitters in the metal and the stone of the memorials, which have been erected in their honour by the grateful ones, in defiance of the ungrateful.”

Francouzský spisovatel a válečný letec Antoine de Saint-Exupéry napsal: „Hrdinové neumírají, přeměňují se v nebe a to modré nebe se spolu se sluncem a hvězdami třpytí v kovu a kameni pomníků, které jim z úcty vystavěli vděční navzdory nevděčným.”
