5.5.2015 se uskutečnila již pátá vzpomínková akce na RAF Operaci Circus 157 ze dne 5.5.1942, při které bylo v okolí Yper sestřeleno pět pilotů Spitfirů RAF, z nichž čtyři přišli na místě o život . Pietní večer na vojenském hřbitově Ypres Town Extension Komise britského společenství pro válečné hroby (CWGC) zorganizovali tradičně Chris Lock a Milena Kolaříková-Lock.
On the 5th May 2015, the fifth remembrance event took place commemorating the RAF Operation Circus 157 of the 5th May 1942, during which five RAF Spitfire pilots were shot down near Ypres and four of them lost their lives on the spot. Remembrance evening at the Ypres Town Extension CWGC military cemetery was traditionally organised by Chris Lock and Milena Kolaříková-Lock.

Pozvání k účasti laskavě přijali mj J.E. paní Alison Rose,velvyslankyně Velké Británie v Belgii, J.E. MGR Jaroslav Kurfürst, velvyslanec České republiky v Belgii, pplk Christophe Onraet – vojenský velitel provincie Západní Flandry, plk Filip Borremans Ir – velitel vojenské logistické základny CCMP v Yprách. Přivítali jsme též dceru SGT Karla Pavlíka – paní Carole Fenn s rodinou, zástupce místních veteránských organisací Královské belgické Entente, RAFA-SAFA a RBL Scotland – Passchendaele and District Branch a pana Wima Huyghe a Dircka Decuypere –vedoucí historické letecko- archeologické skupiny, která z hlubokého jílu u vesnice Dranouter exhumovala sestřelený Spitfire SGT Karla Pavlíka. Pan Huyghe financoval krásný památník SGT Pavlíkovi na místě jeho sestřelení a pan Decuypere spolu s panem Vandenameele napsali strhující knížku Circus 157. Přítomni byli též vlajkonosiči veteránských organizací a další vlastenečtí příznivci a přátelé.
H.E. Mrs Alison Rose, ambassador of Great Britain to Belgium, as well as H.E. Mgr. Jaroslav Kurfürst, ambassador of the Czech Republic to Belgium kindly accepted the invitation, as well as Lt Col Christophe Onraet – Commander of the Belgian military forces in the Province of West Flanders and Col Filip Borremans Ir – Commander of the Belgian army logisitics centre CCMP in Ypres. We also welcomed the daughter of SGT Karel Pavlík – Mrs. Carole Fenn and her family, representatives of the local veterans´ associations Royal Belgian Entente, RAFA/SAFA and RBL Scotland – Passchendaele and District Branch and Mr. Wim Huyghe and Dirck Decuypere, leaders of the historical aviation archeology group, which excavated the shot down Spitfire of SGT Karel Pavlík from the deep clay near Dranouter village. Mr Huyghe financed the beautiful memorial to SGT Pavlik near the the pilot´s crash site and Mr Decuypere together with Mr Vandenameele wrote a most interesting book Circus 157. Also present were the standard bearers of the veterans´ associations as well as patriotic supporters and friends.
Pamětní večer započal v 19:00 hod pietním aktem na vojenském hřbitově Ypres Town Extension CWGC. Po krátkém úvodním projevu Chrise a Mileny byla kaplanem vojenského kostela Sv. Jiří v Yprách Brianem Llewellynem, bývalým velitelem letky RAF, přednesena modlitba za padlé letce. Po minutě ticha pak následovalo položení věnců k hrobům sestřelených pilotů. Pietní akt pokračoval čtyřmi státními hymnami – britskou, kanadskou,českou a belgickou – a zakončen byl v 19:30 nízkým přeletem nad hřbitovem dvou stíhaček F-16 belgického vzdušného komponentu ve formaci „jeden dolů-sestřelen“, na pamět padlých pilotů. Přelet byl zorganizován plk Borremansem a byl skutečně nezapomenutelným završením pietního aktu.
Remembrance evening started at 7 pm with a commemoration act at the Ypres Town Extension CWGC military cemetery. After a brief introductory speech by Chris and Milena, padre Brian Llewellyn of St. George´s military church in Ypres, a former RAF SQN Leader, recited the RAF Collect and prayer for the falle. This was followed by one minute of silence and then the wreaths were placed at the graves of the fallen pilots. Remembrance act continued with playing of the four national anthems – British, Canadian, Czech and Belgian – and it was concluded by alow flypast performed by two f-16 fighters of the Belgian air component in the formation „one-down“, in honour of the fallen comrades-in-arms. The flypast was organised by Col Borremans Ir and was a truly unforgettable culmination of this remembrance act.
Poté se naše skupina odebrala k Meninské bráně – památníku nezvěstných v Yprech, kde jsme se zúčastnili každovečerní ceremonie poslední večerky. Paní velvyslankyně Rose a pan velvyslanec Mgr Kurfürst šli bok po boku položit věnce na pamět padlých – symbolizujíce tak stáletrvající spojenectví a přátelství mezi našimi národy. Pplk Onraet, Milena a plk Borremans následně položili věnec na paměť RAF Operace Circus 157.
Our group then walked to the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres, where we took part in the daily Last Post evening ceremony. Ambassador Rose and ambassador Kurfüerst walked side by side to place their wreaths in remembrance of the fallen, symbolising thus the continuing alliance and friendship between our nations. Lt Col Onraet, Milena and Col Borremans then placed the wreath in remembrance of the RAF Operation Circus 157.
Pamětní večer jsme uzavřeli přípitkem na paměť padlých v historickém hotelu Regina na Velkém náměstí. Paní velvyslankyně Alison Rose v krátkém proslovu ocenila uspořádání této pietní akce a poděkovala organizátorům i všem účastníkům. V přátelské a srdečné atmosféře všichni také se zájmem naslouchali vyprávění pana Vandenameele, jednoho z posledních místních belgických odbojářů, jejichž lví podíl na záchraně a repatriaci sestřelených spojeneckých pilotů a jejich sebeobětování ve druhé světové válce byly též vzpomenuty během předcházejícího pietního aktu na hřbitově CWGC Ypres Town Extension. Pan Vandenameele nám líčil, jak yperský hotel Regina sloužil během 2. světové války coby přestupní stanice sestřelených spojeneckých pilotů, kteří byli odbojáři ukrýváni v tajném pokoji na půdě, do kterého byl vstup falešnými dveřmi v zadní stěně skříně na šaty. Podstoupená rizika umocňuje fakt, že v hotelu se ubytovávali ve stejné době též němečtí důstojníci!
The evening of commemoration was concluded by the toast of remembrance at the historical hotel Regina on the Grote Markt. Ambassador Rose in a short speach appreciated the organisation of this commemorative event and thanked both the organisers and all the participants. In a friendly and cordial atmosphere all of us listened with great interest to the story of Mr. Vandenameele, one of the last members of the local Belgian resistance. The resistance had a lion share in the recovery and repatriation of the downed allied pilots. Their self-sacrifice was also remembered during the ceremony at the Ypres Town Extension CWGC cemetery. Mr. Vandenameele told us how the Ypres hotel Regina served as a transfer stop of the shot down allied pilots, who were hidden by the resistance in a room in the attics, to which one could only enter through a false door – the back panel of a big wardrobe. The risks taken are underlined by the fact that the hotel was used by the German officers for accommodation at the same time!
Pietní večer se nemohl vydařit lépe – jako by nad námi stateční padlí letci drželi ochrannou ruku: vítr se utišil a po lijáku vysvitlo slunce. Všichni, kdo přišli, sdíleli slavnostní zamyšlenou náladu a vrchovatou měrou přispěli k důstojnému uctění památky padlých pilotů i belgických odbojářů.
The remembrance evening could not have been better – as if the gallant fallen pilots held their protective hands above us: the wind died down and after a storm the sun lit the sky. All, who attended, shared respectful pensive mood and richly contributed to the dignified commemoration of the fallen pilots and the resistance members.
