Neutrální Švýcarsko bylo jedinou zemí, která mezi dvěma světovými válkami dokázala pravidelně pořádat rozsáhlé a mezinárodně dobře obsazené letecké setkání.

Curyšský mítink, konaný v pětiletých intervalech, tak byl pokládán za měřítko vyspělosti tehdejších evropských letectev.

Neutral Switzerland was the only country which managed to stage big and well attended regular international Air Meetings in the interwar years. The event at Zurich, which took place every five years, was considered the benchmark for assessing the capabilities of the existing European air forces.

Do naší letecké historie se nejvýznamněji zapsal poslední, čtvrtý ročník, konaný od 23. července do 1. srpna 1937. Proběhl ve stínu zhoršující se mezinárodní situace, a proto měl i své politické konotace. Do Curychu se tehdy slétli „nejlepší letci a letadla z celé Evropy“. Ze čtrnácti zemí byla zdaleka nejpočetnější německá výprava. Demonstrovala zde technickou převahu své nedávno odtajněné Luftwaffe, jejíž příslušníci tehdy prodělávali křest ohněm v právě probíhající občanské válce ve Španělsku. Přesto českoslovenští letci v silné mezinárodní konkurenci dokázali vybojovat řadu významných úspěchů, které přesáhly rámec samotné curyšské soutěže.

The fourth and also the last event, which took place between 23 July to 1 August 1937, has gained a special place in our own air force history. It took place in the shadow of the worsening international situation which brought its own political connotations. The best airmen and aircraft from the whole of Europe gathered in Zurich. Out of the fourteen participating countries, Germany had the biggest representation. It demonstrated the technical advantage of the recently declassified Luftwaffe at the time when its members were going through a baptism by fire in the raging Spanish Civil War. Despite fierce international opposition, the Czechoslovak airmen gained several important successes which surpassed the Zurich event itself.

Tato publikace se vůbec poprvé snaží postihnout jejich účast komplexně – od horečných příprav až po slavné uvítání doma. Představuje jak soutěžní letouny, tak jejich piloty s jejich pohnutými a mnohdy paradoxními životními osudy. Prostřednictvím více než 700 dobových fotografií, vesměs dosud neznámých a nepublikovaných, pak dokumentuje legendární curyšské zápolení den po dni a prakticky hodinu po hodině!

This publication aims to describe their participation in its entirety – from the frantic preparations down to the ovations they received on their return back home. It presents both the competition aircraft and the pilots who flew them, many of whom had very varied, often paradoxical, lives. Through more than 700 period photographs, many of them not seen before, the publication describes the famous Zurich competition day by day, hour by hour!
