na Památníku Okřídleného lva 13.11.2017.
At 14:00 13 November 2017, a ceremony to unveil 2507 names of Czechoslovak men and women who served in the RAF during WW2 was unveiled at the Winged Lion monument at Klarov, Prague.
V pondělí, 13. listopadu 2017 ve 14:00 hod. byla u Památníku Okřídleného lva na pražském Klárově, slavnostně odhalena pamětní deska se jmény všech 2507 československých mužů a žen, kteří sloužili v RAF během 2. světové války.
Attending the ceremony were Jana Černochová and Marek Benda, Members of Parliament for the ODS Party, Maj. Gen Jaromir Sebesta, Chief of the Czech Air Force, Col Petr Tomanek, Commander of the 21st Tactical Air Force Base at Caslav, G/Cpt Michael Longstaff, Defence Attaché British Embassy Prague, Cardinal Dominik Duka, Cardinal of Prague, Oldřich Lomecký, Mayor of Prague 1, Jiří Hynek, President of the Asociace obranného a bezpečnostního průmyslu ČR (Defence and Security Industry Association of the Czech Republic, Czechoslovak RAF veterans Emil Boček and Pavel Vranský, a large contingent of Czech Air Fore personnel from Caslav Air Force base and a Czech Army band. Amongst the large group of attendees were numerous relatives of Czechoslovak RAF airmen – including several from the UK – and other well-wishers. The event was covered by a large number of journalists from the Czech media including TV and Radio.
Slavnostního aktu se zúčastnili Jana Černochová a Marek Benda, poslanci Parlamentu ČR za ODS, generálmajor Jaromír Šebesta, velitel Vzdušných sil AČR, plukovník Petr Tománek, velitel 21. základny taktického letectva v Časlavi, G/Cpt Michael Longstaff, vojenský atašé Velvyslanectví Spojeného království v Praze, kardinál Dominik Duka, arcibiskup pražský, Oldřich Lomecký, starosta Městské části Praha 1, Jiří Hynek, předseda Asociace obranného a bezpečnostního průmyslu ČR, veteráni československého letectva RAF Emil Boček a Pavel Vranský, početný kontinent leteckého personálu z 21. základny takt. letectva v Čáslavi a Ústřední hudba AČR. Mezi několika stovkami návštěvníků tvořili velkou skupinu účastníci z řad příbuzných československých letců RAF, včetně několika z Velké Británie a řady dalších sympatizantů. Akce se těšila velkému zájmu novinářů a fotografů z českých médií, včetně rozhlasu a televize.
The ceremony commenced at 14:00 with a welcoming address, in Czech, by Maj.Gen Bohuslav Dvořák and by Dagmar Šišková-Johnson whose address was in Czech and English for the benefit of non-Czech speakers amongst the attendees.
Celá akce byla slavnostně zahájena ve 14:00 hod. uvítací řečí generálmajora Bohuslava Dvořáka a po něm i Dagmar Šiškové-Johnson, která svůj příspěvek pronesla i v AJ pro přítomné zahraniční hosty.
At 14:05 there was single pass flypast by two JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft from the 21st Tactical Air Force, Caslav.
V 14:05 došlo nad hlavami všech přítomných k průletu dvou stíhacích letounů JAS 39 Gripen z 21. základny takt. letectva v Čáslavi.
Speeches then followed by Maj. Gen Jaromir Sebesta, Jiří Hynek and concluded with a few words by Emil Boček and Pavel Vranský.
Slavnostní úvod pak dokončili svými příspěvky generálmajor Jaromír Šebesta, Jiří Hynek a několika větami i váleční veteráni – generálové Emil Boček a Pavel Vranský.
Emil Boček and Pavel Vranský then unveiled the new plaques on which the names of the 2,507 Czechoslovak men and women names who served in the RFA during WW2 are inscribed. Cardinal Duka then led a prayer for their remembrance which was followed by a minutes silence. The national anthems of the Czech Republic, Great Britain and the Slovak Republic were then played by the Czech Army band.
Oba veteráni, pánové Emil Boček a Pavel Vranský pak odhalili nové mosazné desky se jmény všech 2507 československých mužů a žen, kteří sloužili během 2. svět. války v RAF. Pan kardinál Duka pak přednesl modlitbu “Otče náš” na uctění jejich památky, která pak byla zakončena slavnostní minutou ticha. Ceremoniál odhalení vyvrcholil národními hymnami České republiky, Velké Británie a Slovenské republiky, v provedení Ústřední hudby AČR.

Gen Jaromir Sebesta and Col Petr Tomanek on behalf of the Czech Air Force, Oldřich Lomecký Mayor of Prague 1, G/Cpt Michael Longstaff on behalf of the British Embassy Prague, Dagmar Šišková-Johnson and Eva Hrubá on behalf of Czechoslovak RAF descendants, Euan Edworthy and Robert Neale on behalf of the British ex-pat community in the Czech and Slovak Republics, Jiří Hynek President of AOBP/ DSIA and Maj.Gen Bohuslav Dvořák on behalf of AOBP/DSIA – Defence and Security Industry Association, Maj.Gen Emil Boček, Brg.Gen Pavel Vranský and Jessica Horvathová on behalf of Czech Veterans and the A/M Karel Janousek Fund and Aleš Brix on behalf of Česká mincovna. Further wreaths, flower bouquets and individual flowers were laid by well-wishers.
Poté proběhlo kladení věnců. Za Parlament ČR to byli Jana Černochová a Marek Benda, generálmajor Jaromír Šebesta a plukovník Petr Tománek jménem Armády ČR, starosta Oldřich Lomecký za Městskou část Praha 1, G/Cpt Michael Longstaff jménem Britského velvyslanectví v Praze, dámy Dagmar Šišková – Johnson a Eva Hrubá jménem rodinných příbuzných československých letců RAF, pánové Euan Edworthy a Robert Neale za britskou exilovou komunitu v ČR a SR, Jiří Hynek prezident AOBP a generálmajor Bohuslav Dvořák jménem AOBP, generálmajor Emil Boček, brigádní generál Pavel Vranský a paní Jessica Horváthová jménem českých veteránů a Nadační fond maršála RAF Karla Janouška spolu s Alešem Brixem, jménem České mincovny. Další věnce, kytice květin a jednotlivé květy byly položeny od celé řady sympatizantů.
Particularly poignant, after the ceremony, was seeing people going up to the names plaques and searching for a relatives name.
Obzvlášť strhující bylo pak sledovat, jak se po odhalení desek vydali všichni hledat jména svých příbuzných a známých.

A special mention and thanks is due to the numerous Czechoslovak RAF descendants, who are now living around the world, who initiated and donated towards a wreath so that it could be layed at this ceremony on behalf of Czechoslovak RAF descendants.
Na tomto místě je třeba zmínit a vyjádřit dík početné komunitě rodinných příslušníků letců RAF, žijících po celém světě, kteří tuto akci pomohli podpořit a jménem všech potomků letců RAF věnovali při této slavnostní příležitosti svůj věnec.

For me, I am in awe that so many were willing to leave their homes in the beginning, having little or no foreign language, living in an era with no social media and probably no phones, with an uncertain future hanging over them and not knowing whether they would ever see their loved ones again. That’s incredible bravery. I’ll do my best to ensure my descendants know all about it.
Já sám zůstávám v úžasu nad tím, kolik lidí bylo ochotno hned na začátku opustit své domovy, s chabými či vůbec žádnými znalostmi cizího jazyka, v době bez sociálních sítí a pravděpodobně i bez možnosti telefonního spojení, to vše při nejisté budoucnosti, která nad nimi visela a s velkými pochybami, zda ještě někdy vůbec své milované uvidí. To vše od nich vyžadovalo neuvěřitelnou statečnost. Udělám vše, co je v mých silách, abych zajistil, že moji potomci se o tom všem dozví.

Miroslav Liškutín, DFC, AFC, now the most RAF decorated and senior of the now few surviving Czechoslovak RAF airmen, on hearing the news of the Winged Lion names inscription said:
Miroslav Liškutín, DFC, AFC, v současné době nositel nejvyšších státních vyznamenání mezi několika posledními žijícími československými letci RAF, při zprávě o chystaném osazení všech jmen letců na Památník Okřídleného lva, řekl:
“My Czechoslovak RAF colleagues and I were among those who helped make a difference in the effort to defeat Nazi tyranny. On behalf of my colleagues, I am pleased that our names are now inscribed on the Winged Lion Memorial, so that our endeavours, achievements and losses provide a lasting legacy for future generations.”
“Já i mí českoslovenští kolegové z Královského letectva jsme byli mezi těmi, kteří přispěli k porážce nacistického teroru. Jsem poctěn, a myslím, že mohu hovořit také jménem mých kolegů, že jsou naše jména zapsána na této pamětní desce památníku Okřídleného lva. Naše úsilí, úspěchy i ztráty tak představují trvalé poselství pro budoucí generace.”
Unlike 2014 where the Winged Lion Memorial was financed by donations of Kc3.3 million (€128,000) from the British expat communities in the Czech and Slovak Republics, the funds raised for the plinth name inscription were donated by members of the Czech business community, namely – Asociace obranného a bezpečnostního průmyslu ČR; AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE a.s; Sellior&Bellot, a.s; Česká zbrojovka, a.s; OMNIPOL a.s; LOM PRAHA s.p; RETIA, a.s; VOP CZ, s.p; TTC MARCONI s.r.o; EUROPIEN AIR; SERVICES s.r.o; and MEOPTA – optika, s.r.o.

Free Czechoslovak Air Force 
Maybe a bit late to add to the comments, with which I wholeheartedly agree. My father refused to return to his homeland after the fall of communism and receiving a letter which told him he had been ‘rehabilitated’ (he laughed when he read it). He was invited by President Havel to the celebrations of VE day in 1995 but refused to attend. He loved his homeland but not in a nationalistic way, more like the way you love your mother for giving birth to you. He felt that he and his comrades had been betrayed (which they had), so he always said the country he knew no longer existed. When he spent a year in Canada as an instructor during the war, he was asked to stay and join the Canadian Air Force but he declined because he wanted to go back home to help rebuild his country. How ironic that the freedom those brave men fought for was denied to them in the homeland they loved and fought for. It is indeed better late, than never but it was long, long overdue.

The man and women we patriots/vlastenci, who we ready to die for their homeland and live in a free country. They succeed in destroying one evil but did not escaped the second evil communist regime from 1948 and paid for it dearly. My father and mother were one of them. I am glad that this memorial is standing to remind us all, that patriots are defenders of the free world.
Lets not mix patriotism with nationalism, I feel today our society is confusing the two. Nationalism is what the RAF men and women were fighting against.
I was the Defense and Air Attache, USA in Prague in 1979 – 1981 – it was a great day when the British Embassy had the “Old Boys” to a reception – even the STB did not bother them –
Our Dad made very little fuss about his travails during the war, leaving his homeland and the injustice following his return, war injuries and a deep sense of loss of family, friends, finding his way forward in a foreign country. Those who saw this in their own family will know how difficult these things can be and by the time Havel came to the Uk Dad said it was already too late to ever compensate the hurt and deprivations.
The ceremony was good and the acknowledgement to our fathers and grandfathers goes some way to honour their memory. But we must be asking ourselves, when we look at the millions of people who are suffering now through wars -‘what have we learned’?

Czech men and women, ready to die for liberation of their homeland in WW II were severely punished by their own people, THE COMMUNISTS, such a shame and nobody of these COMMUNISTS ever apologized!!!!!
PRESIDENT Vaclav HAVEL after the fall of communism recognized the bravery of these men and women, expressed his thanks and appreciation, for many too late…..

The memorial naming the airmen of the Free Czechoslovak Air force unveiled on 13 November 2017 in Prague was truly a moving occasion and brought together both the English and Czech of descendants of these brave men. For myself and my Czech cousin it was a time when we could as a family remember our fathers who both flew with the RAF and has brought a certain sense of closure to a family history torn apart by political divide and tragedy. The unexpected fly pass was indeed the icing on the cake as was the warm reception we all received at the British Embassy. My family’s thanks go to those who have so tirelessly worked towards this day and may we always continue to give thanks for those who have gone before us and have allowed us to enjoy the freedom we enjoy.
It is really good to see all these people being remembered at this time of year especially…..
