TE578IXDel to 312 Sqn then to CzAF on 30/08/45 (UB-425).This aircraft was exported to Israel and moved on to Burma in October 1954. It was however, returned to Israel in December. Most recently it has been in storage at Hatzerim in Israel for the Israeli AF Museum.

Note* The original order from Israel was for some 50+ Spitfire IX’s (and a further 9 later). Deliveries began on May 20th 1948. Some of the aircraft didn’t arrive in time to participate in the ongoing hostilities. They were ‘exported’ by a variety of methods. Six aircraft were moved directly by air under Operation Velveta 1; with a further 12 aircraft being moved on December 18th 1948, under Operation Velveta 2. ( Initially the Spitfires were painted in Yugoslav AF markings for their transit for Kunovice to Niksic in Montenegro (a former Luftwaffe base in the then Yugoslavia). One Spitfire was left behind at Niksic after damaging its undercarriage on landing. Five other carried on and were led towards Israel by an Israeli AF Norseman aircraft . Unfortunately two of the aircraft had to land on Rhodes due to lack of fuel and were ‘interned’. Later on Yugoslavia refused the Israelis permission to refuel and had to be ‘bought’. Other Spit’s were dismantled and together with 12 Merlin 66 engines, were moved in crates marked as ‘Scrap Iron’.

In addition the Czechs also trained 81 pilots and 69 ground crew.

  1. Thank you for this record. Vaclav Ruprecht was my grandfather and Karel Posta was his best friend.

  2. excellent work of histoical data about aeroplanes, types , markings, actions…thank u, and i wish u more sharing historic titles!!! greetings from czech rep.

  3. Hi!
I’m looking for pictures of the Czech Spitfires at Mendlesham, Suffolk England in 1944. I’m finding it difficult. Please, has anyone any pictures?

  4. Jaroslav Kauer nezemřel pri přistání. Zemrel v nemocnici vojenské St.Omer.

  5. I was lookng for aircraft EP547 which ended up at 131 sqn but was shot down on the 27th of August 1943. Thank you for the information

  6. Hawker Hurricane IIC BE581 – the “Night Reaper’ of Karel Kuttelwascher – ended its days on 7 November 1942. At that time, it was assigned to 532 Squadron, a unit on Turbinlite duty. The New Zealand pilot Sergeant W H Carter crashed the aircraft during landing when its lights failed. Carter was uninjured but the Hurricane was a right off.

  7. Excellent historical notes on the Spitfire aircraft used in WW2 by the Czech Airmen. Does anybody know if the black aircraft used by Karel Kuttelwascher (The Night Reaper) is on display anywhere?
