Czechoslovak RAF Airmen Remembered
Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery, Noord-Brabant, Holland
On the night of 10/11th April 1942, a Wellington bomber of 311 Sqn, Z8838, (KX-Z); was shot down by Luftwaffe night fighter while returning from a bombing raid on Essen, Germany.
The crew was F/Sgt HRDINA Josef, 30 – Air Gunner, F/Sgt KALENSKÝ Josef, 25 – Pilot, Sgt KODEŠ Karel, 21 – co-Pilot, Sgt PEPRNÍČEK Jan, 22 – Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, Sgt POLITZER Josef, 28 – Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, F/O RYCHNOVSKÝ Karel, 23 – Navigator.
The Wellington crashed 4.5 km east of Kolhorn, Holland. All the crew were killed and initially buried at Middenmeer, Holland, five in a communal grave and one in a separate grave. In 2004 their remains were re-interred at Bergen-op-Zoom.
