Raná léta
The Early Years

Narodil se ve Věteřově, okres Kyjov, v rodině Františka Pouchlého a jeho manželky Andělíny, rozené Cibulkové. Po absolvování obecné školy pokračoval ve studiu na klasickém gymnáziu v Praze. Vstoupil do řádu menších bratří kapucínů a navštěvoval řádovou Serafínskou školu v Praze. Přijal řádové jméno Basil. Vystudoval filosofii v holandském Breust-Eijsden v letech 1932 až 1935 a poté pokračoval ve studiích teologie v Olomouci v letech 1935 až 1939. Na kněze byl vysvěcen v Olomouci 29. června 1939. Poté byl poslán na další studia do Říma, kde měl dosáhnout doktorátu z filosofie.

He was born at Věteřov, district Kyjov into the family of František Pouchlý and his wife Andělína, née Cibulková. After finishing the local school, he continued his studies at the grammar school in Prague. He joined the order of Capuchin Friars Minor and attended the order’s Seraphim School in Prague. He took the order name of Basil. He studied philosophy in Breust-Eijsden in the Netherlands from 1932 to 1935 and then continued his studies of theology in Olomouc from 1935 to 1939. He was ordained a priest in Olomouc on June 29, 1939. He was then sent to Rome for further studies, where he was supposed to obtain a doctorate in philosophy.

He left the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia on 28. 10. 1939 for the purpose of further studies.

Czechoslovak Army in France

Dne 1.11. 1939 se prostřednictvím francouzského velvyslanectví v Římě dal k dispozici československým vojenským úřadům v Paříži a 25. 5. 1940 opustil Itálii. Následně 29. 5. 1940 byl odveden na československém konzulátu v Paříži. Posléze byl 11. června prezentován v hodnosti vojína u pěšího pluku 3, který byl součástí 1. čs. divize v Agde, kde prodělal zdravotní kurs a byl přidělen k divizní zdravotní rotě.

On 1.11. In 1939 he made himself available to the Czechoslovak military authorities in Paris through the French embassy in Rome and left Italy on 25 May 1940. Subsequently, on 29 May 1940, he was taken to the Czechoslovak consulate in Paris. Later, on June 11, he was presented in the rank of private in Infantry Regiment 3, which was part of the 1st Czechoslovak Army. division in Agde, where he underwent a medical course and was assigned to the divisional medical company.

V rámci reorganizace původní 1. čs. divize byl vtělen ke 2. pěšímu praporu 1. čs. brigády v hodnosti vojína.

As part of the reorganization of the original 1st Czechoslovak division was attached to the 2nd infantry battalion of the 1st Czechoslovak Army. brigade in the rank of private.

Evacuation to England

Po porážce Francie se nalodil v Agde na loď Mohamed Ali El Kebir, na které odplul do Velké Británie, kam dorazil 7. 7. 1940.

After the defeat of France, he boarded the ship Mohamed Ali El Kebir in Agde, on which he sailed to Great Britain, where he arrived on 7. 7. 1940.

311. perutě
311 Sqn

Dne 31. 1. 1941 byl přijat v britské hodnosti majora k československému zahraničnímu letectvu v britském RAF a přidělen jako vojenský duchovní k 311.čs. bombardovací peruti. Působil rovněž jako výchovný důstojník a zastupoval výbor pro řízení s pozůstalostmi v britské hodnosti Squadron Leader (major). V rámci evidence v československé armádě byl veden jako vojín až do 28. 10. 1941, kdy byl povýšen na podporučíka duchovní služby, 7. 3. 1944 na poručíka duchovní služby a 1. června 1945 byl povýšen na nadporučíka duchovní služby.

On January 31, 1941, he was accepted in the British rank of major to the Czechoslovak foreign air force in the British RAF and assigned as a military chaplain to the 311 Czechoslovak bomber squadron. He also served as an educational officer and represented the estate management committee at the British rank of Squadron Leader. As part of the records in the Czechoslovak army, he was kept as a private until 28. 1O. 1941, when he was promoted to Warrant Officer, on March 7 1944, to the Pilot Officer, and on June 1, 1945, he was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer.

Do Československa se vrátil 24. 7. 1945 a od 27. 7. téhož roku byl jako přidělený důstojník přemístěn na osobní oddě­ lení Inspektorátu čs. letectva na Hlavním štábu v Praze, kde měl na starosti evidenci zahraničních letců a nadále působil jako vojenský duchovní. Dnem 1. března 1946 byl povýšen na kapitána duchovní služby a o měsíc později, 1. dubna 1946, byl od velitelství letectva přemístěn na I. odbor 6. oddělení MNO jako referent pro osobní a organizační záležitosti a válečné hroby na západních bojištích. K 1. říjnu 1946 byl povýšen na štábního kapitána duchovní služby v záloze. V roce 1947 odešel z kapucínského řádu a byl inkardinován v pražské arcidiecézi. V souvislosti s tím byl k 1. 2.1947 aktivován a stal se štábním kapitánem duchovní služby z povolání. 27. 5. 1947 byl při zkrácení čekatelské doby povýšen na majora duchovní služby.

He returned to Czechoslovakia on 24 July 1945 and from 27 July of the same year he was transferred as an assigned officer to the personnel department of the Inspectorate of the Czechoslovak Air Force at the Main Staff in Prague, where he oversaw the registration of the airmen, who returned from fighting, and continued to work as a military chaplain. On 1 March 1946 he was promoted to Captain and a month later, on 1 April 1946, he was transferred from the Air Force Headquarters to the 1st Department of the 6th Department of the MNO as an officer for personal and organisational matters and issues concerning the war graves on the western battlefields. On October 1, 1946, he was promoted to reserve Staff Captain. In 1947, he left the Capuchin Order and was incardinated in the Prague Archdiocese. In connection with this, on February 1, 1947, he was reactivated to the rank of Staff Captain, still working as military chaplain. On May 27, 1947, when the waiting period was shortened, he was promoted to Major.

Zatčen
Arrested

Dne 1O. 1. 1950 byl zatčen a obžalován ze špionáže a velezrady a posléze byl 12. 9. 1950 Státním soudem v Praze odsouzen pro trestný čin vyzvědačství na 18 let, k peněžitému trestu ve výši 10 000 Kč, konfiskaci veškerého osobního majetku a ztrátě čestných občanských práv na 1O roků. Vězněn byl v Leopoldově a na Mírově. V roce 1954 podali jeho rodiče žádost o milost prezidentu republiky, která byla ale zamítnuta.

On 10 January 1950 he was arrested and charged with espionage and high treason and was subsequently sentenced by the State Court in Prague on 12 September 1950 for the crime of espionage to 18 years, a fine of 10,000 CZK, confiscation of all personal property and loss of civil rights for 10 years. He was imprisoned in Leopoldov and Mírov. In 1954 his parents filed a request for clemency with the President of the Republic, which was rejected.

Propuštěn z vězení
Released from Prison

Rozhodnutím Krajského soudu v Praze ze dne 23. května 1960 mu byl prominut zbytek trestu. Při rehabi litačních procesech v šedesátých letech byl zproštěn obžaloby z trestní věci. Po propuštění pracoval jako jeřábník v těžkém průmyslu v Brně, později se odstěhoval do Prahy, kde později pracoval i jako externí učitel jazyků v Československé televizi v Praze.

By the decision of the Regional Court in Prague on 23 May 1960, he was pardoned for the remainder of his sentence. During rehabilitation trials in the 1960s he was acquitted of criminal charges. After his release he worked as a crane operator in heavy industry in Brno, later moving to Prague, where he later worked as an external language teacher at Czechoslovak Television in Prague.

V listopadu 2017 bylo jeho jméno spolu se jmény dalších 2533 československých mužů a žen, kteří během 2. svět. války sloužili v RAF, odhaleno u pomníku Okřídleného lva na pražském Klárově.

In November 2017, his name, along with the names of 2533 other Czechoslovak men and women who had served in the RAF during WW2, was unveiled at the Winged Lion Monument at Klárov, Prague.
