Czechoslovak Fighter Pilots

Czechoslovak Fighter Pilots

in the Battle of Britain

by

Marek Žatkovič

The main aim of this book is to give an idea and lighten up events, that took place during the war in England in 1940. A handful of Czechoslovak fighters intervened in the air battle over England. For some, the battle was fatal, and to this day, the former events are obscured by a multitude of questions, unclarities, and half-truths. Through memories, archive documents, and the testimonies of direct participants, I made an attempt to reconstruct the past events as faithfully as possible. This attempt, with the distance of eighty-five years, is difficult yet truly necessary. The memory of young men, who were fighting over England and died in the name of ideals of freedom still has its justification. I tried to give the narrative a broader human dimension by finding truths about the enemies. The fates of the German pilots, flying under the symbol of swastika, are an integral part of Czech brave pilots‘ stories.
