of World War Two

(Prague, 11 March 2014) Her Excellency Jan Thompson OBE, HM Ambassador to the Czech Republic, today announced the donation of ‘The Winged Lion’, a memorial to the Czech and Slovak airmen who flew with the RAF, from the British community to the people of the Czech and Slovak Republics. She spoke at a ceremony held at LOM Praha at Kbely Airfield in Prague.

PRAHA, 11. března 2014 – Její Excelence Jan Thompson OBE, Její Veličenstvo Velvyslankyně pro Českou republiku, dnes na slavnostním ceremoniálu na vojenském letišti společnosti LOM Praha ve Kbelích oznámila, že britská komunita daruje Čechům a Slovákům památník Okřídleného lva, který je vyjádřením vděčnosti českým a slovenským letcům sloužícím ve vojenském letectvu britských ozbrojených sil (RAF – Royal Air Force).

The Winged Lion is a two-metre bronze statue by Colin Spofforth. It symbolises the bravery of more than 2,500 Czechoslovak airmen who escaped their Nazi-occupied homeland and joined the RAF, where 493 lost their lives in combat during the Second World War.

Okřídlený lev je dvoumetrová bronzová socha vytvořená sochařem Colinem Spofforthem, která symbolizuje odvahu více než dvou a půl tisíců československých letců, jež opustili nacisty okupovanou rodnou zem a připojili se k RAF. Celkem 493 z nich přišlo v bojích během druhé světové války o život.

The memorial will be unveiled in Prague on the 17th June in a ceremony accompanied by a Spitfire fly-past and Beating Retreat by the Royal Air Force Central Band. The occasion will also be marked by the production of a TV documentary ‘They Flew for Freedom’ and the publication of a book by Nick Watson: ‘Valour in the Clouds.’

Památník bude odhalen 17. června v Praze při slavnostním ceremoniálu doprovázeném přeletem stíhacího letounu Spitfire a promenádou ústřední vojenské kapely RAF. Událost bude také zaznamenána v televizním dokumentárním pořadu nazvaném ‘They Flew for Freedom’ (Let za svobodu) a v knize Nicka Watsona s názvem ‘Valour in the Clouds’ (Srdce v oblacích).

The Ambassador said: ‘The bilateral relationship between the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom today is strong and broad. It spans the spheres of culture, politics, science and technology and, especially, trade and investment. A defining point in the history of our relationship, however, was forged during the Second World War, by Czechoslovaks fighting as part of the British Armed Forces. The part played by the airmen was particularly important at critical stages, not least of which was the Battle of Britain. I am delighted that the thriving British community in the Czech Republic today has recognised this invaluable contribution, and wishes to record its thanks by presenting such a splendid statue to the Czech people. I thank the sponsors who have made it possible, but also the many individuals who have contributed in other ways. It says a great deal about the warmth of our enduring relationship, and I fully support the project.’

Velvyslankyně řekla: „Reciproční vztahy mezi Českou republikou a Velkou Británií jsou silné a velkorysé a zahrnují oblasti kultury, politiky, vědy, technologie a obzvláště obchodu a investic. Stěžejním historickým milníkem pro vybudování našich vztahů byla ovšem druhá světová válka, během níž Čechoslováci bojovali po boku britských ozbrojených sil. Zejména důležitá byla jejich účast v letectvu, stejně jako v bitvě o Británii. Jsem velmi potěšena, že si současná britská komunita v České republice uvědomuje tento neocenitelný přínos a chce své díky vyjádřit touto symbolickou sochou. Velmi děkuji sponzorům, kteří projekt umožnili, a také dalším jedincům, kteří k němu přispěli jiným způsobem. Tento projekt, který vypovídá o našich dlouhodobých vřelých vztazích, plně podporuji.“

The memorial is the brainchild of Mr Euan Edworthy, a public relations consultant who has lived and worked in the Czech Republic for 17 years. He said: ‘As a child brought up in the UK, I was frequently reminded of the heroics by the Czechoslovak airmen who fought in the Second World War by my father, who was also a serving RAF officer. It has always been my ambition since arriving in the Czech Republic in 1994 to create a memorial for these extraordinarily brave men and to leave a fitting landmark for future generations to come. Their contribution to the Allies’ success against the Luftwaffe was out of all proportion to their numbers: they flew with real gallantry, and some ended up as aces. We thought it was high time to commemorate their achievement and their sacrifice.’

Památník je duchovním dítětem pana Euana Edworthyho, poradce v oblasti public relations, který v České republice žije a pracuje již 17 let. Euan řekl: „Jako dítěti vychovávanému ve Velké Británii mi můj otec, který byl sám důstojníkem RAF, často připomínal hrdinství československých letců, kteří bojovali ve druhé světové válce. Už od roku 1994, kdy jsem přijel do České republiky, jsem toužil po tom, vybudovat pro tyto mimořádně statečné muže památník, a zanechat tak památku budoucím generacím. Jejich zásluhy na úspěších Spojenců proti Luftwaffe byly vzhledem k jejich počtu obdivuhodné. Létali s obrovskou statečností, díky níž se někteří stali historickými hrdiny. Byl nejvyšší čas připomenout jejich úspěchy a oběti.“

The chairman of the Winged Lion Memorial Appeal Fund is Colonel Andrew Shepherd, British Defence Attaché in the Czech Republic. He said: ‘We have been delighted by the generous response to the announcement of our appeal for funds. Over 35 corporate and individual sponsors have donated close to £100,000 to turn this idea into reality. We see the Winged Lion not only as a memorial to the courage of those 2,500 airmen but also as a celebration of the friendship between the British, Czech and Slovak peoples.’

Předseda fondu památníku Okřídleného lva, plukovník Andrew Shepherd, vojenský atašé britského velvyslanectví v České republice, řekl: „Jsme poctěni velkorysou reakcí na oznámení o otevření našeho fondu. Více než 35 korporátních a individuálních sponzorů věnovalo na realizaci tohoto nápadu téměř 100 000 liber. Okřídlený lev pro nás není jen uctěním památky a odvahy dvou a půl tisíců letců, ale také oslavou přátelství mezi Brity, Čechy a Slováky.“
